Sports Series Recording Bug: Winbledon on ESPN and ESPN2 at same time

Reporting a bug with series recording and "same title" on two channels (but they not the same!) - guide data perhaps.

I had a series recording set for Wimbledon Tennis, which is on Tennis channel and until today has been shown on ESPN. Today is the first day the event was shown on both ESPN and ESPN2, overlapping in the guide: ESPN2 started at 6 AM, ESPN started at 8 AM.  Both events were scheduled and recorded as planned. (ESPN shows Center Court, ESPN2 shows Court 1.)

However, tomorrow again the event is being shown on both ESPN and ESPN2 channels, and is set to begin at 8 AM. The scheduler only plans to record ESPN, and is skipping ESPN2.   In the guide I navigated to 8 AM tomorrow and manually pressed REC on ESPN2 and it showed "Episode Recording" but canceled the ESPN recording. I then pressee REC on ESPN, and it again showed "Episode Recording" and then canceled the ESPN2 recording. This is also happening for Wednesday.

To get both channels to record at the same time I had to cancel the series, then go to each day (Tuesday through Sunday) to manually record all upcoming Wimbledon titles.

I'm not sure if this is solely a guide data issue, for example, if the titles for ESPN and ESPN2 were different in the Guide, would the series recording pick up both events as intended, or if this is an issue with sports/series recording by "event" (in this case, "Wimbledon") since it worked today with the same title on ESPN and ESPN2 but today's events started at different times.

Please send this to the developers to investigate and fix.

My service/device: DIRECTV Stream on Osprey.

Thanks.

I don’t know the internal implementation, but my guess is that they base series recordings purely off the guide, so they need some uniqueness to allow them to distinguish shows.  For that they seem to use the program name (and if it exists, the episode name or number) from the guide info and (at least in some cases) time but not channel number.  It would undoubtedly be useful if the company that supplies the guide info included (as a field that isn’t displayed) a unique identifier for each distinct show, and for them to be aware that this sort of case (shared name but different content) is fairly common in sports (and possibly other cases).  The guide company could then correctly catch cases where the multiple instances are the same vs different (assuming that they’d go to that much effort) and give them different identifiers if appropriate.  That would unfortunately require changes by both the guide company and DirecTV, so I wouldn’t hold my breath.
