Recently we have over and over again the same commercials, every 5 minutes. Often  2 times in a row the same commercials for HBO and Discovery channel. It’s reached a point where it’s a real nuisance and I am considering cancelling my account.

Please realize that DirecTV does not control the commercials on the networks that they deliver to us. Complain to those networks.

Litzdog911 - your statement simply makes no sense.  Who would believe that Directv would give carte blanche to an advertiser, with no rules or conditions?  If an advertiser provided content that violated an FCC policy, would it be reasonable to expect that Directv could say "not our fault, go after the advertiser"?  No, Directv must have/does have control of their advertising content.

Ludwick577 - why are you surprised that someone would want to cancel over repetitive, silly commercials that might run 3 or 4 times IN A ROW?!  The Ad Council commercials are a perfect example.  A simple google search reveals that many Directv customers are extremely annoyed and frustrated, to the extent that they are reconsidering the use of their Directv service.

Then go ahead and cancel. The format want change just to fit your needs.

I can assure you that cancel is what I will do unless the "format", as you call it, does change.  Sitting through the same exact commercial, one after the other, should not be acceptable to any user.  Even my children recognize that something is wrong.  You are certainly free to do so if your standard is that low for a relatively expensive service.  And it really is not "formatting" that we are discussing - it is clearly some type of glitch on the provider's end.

DirecTV like other TV providers is a rebroadcaster. It is between the network and the advertisers on which ones they have and how many. DirecTV simply provides the channel as they receive it.

If the network is injecting commercials more often then you think they have an agreement for, complain to the affected networks.
