Audio issues on Direct TV Stream

I hope some DIrect TV engineers see this note.

Several channels have terrible audio compressors set up very wrong.

A loud sound effect or music stinger drops the level quickly and takes a good 9-10 seconds to recover. Dialog right after a loud hit like this is so low you can’t even hear it. I’m a professional sound mixer for TV and film so I know what I’m talking about. Don’t you people watch your own systems? It’s ridiculous.

Nashville TN based on these channels:

385 - Heroes & Icons (level changes)

4491 Unexplained Zone

(extreme compression causing level shifts)

277 Travel channel

284 Science - not too bad but similar

What streaming device(s)?

How is your audio processed?

When did the problem start?

Thanks for bringing this to our attention, @Seismictom. We’d love to get more details for our engineering team to investigate. What device are you using to stream, and do you have a speaker system hooked up? Also, let us know what troubleshooting you’ve tried so far. You can also find some helpful tips in our sound guide here: Troubleshoot sound and picture issues | DIRECTV Support Charles, DIRECTV Community Team

Thank you for the response Charles :)
Trust me.. I know it has nothing to do with my LG TV. This issue appeared as soon as I switched from Xfinity to AT&T fiber. And it happens on two other TVs in my house. Only on the networks I listed so obviously it isn’t my three TVs all of a sudden.
I am a professional audio engineer (50 years) so I do know what I’m talking about. And yes I went through all the audio settings on both the DTV and my TV settings trying different things. No change. No question these audio leveling devices being used are WAY upstream from my house. Put on Star Trek on the Heroes & Icons channel and just listen to it for 10 minutes. I will be very curious if you hear the same issue.

Thanks for the update! We’ve looped in our team with all the info you provided, so they can investigate the upstream feeds for those channels. We’ll let you know as soon as we have more news. Charles, DIRECTV Community Team

Very puzzling. Hard to imagine why changing internet providers would affect just some network audio.  Keep us posted on what you find.

Not IP. It’s a different service. Xfinity cable Direct TV. That’s when the issue appeared. Could be improper ingesting the programs as far as I know.

Thanks for your patience. Our engineers finished their investigation and noticed some buffering on your devices. While it may seem like a broadcast issue, a fluctuating internet connection can cause audio to compress or drop as the stream tries to keep up. Very interesting. Your telling me - that a loud sound effect causing the audio level to drop significantly and take several seconds to return to normal is a buffering issue??  Even though the video stays perfectly stable?
I find this very hard to believe. I’ve never seen buffering or digital latency cause audio level to go up and down. Glitch or drop out? Sure. Sound like someone turned the volume down and back up? I don’t buy it, sorry

We understand your skepticism, but our team were unable to replicate the audio shifts when testing those specific channels. However, the logs for your devices showed active buffering during those times. In streaming, audio and video are processed differently—video often stays clear due to caching while the audio fluctuates to compensate for connection dips. To help rule this out, please try the troubleshooting guide and tips in the link we shared above to improve your streaming experience. Charles, DIRECTV Community Team

Well I well certainly fool with this a bit, but the AT&T router signal is only about 20 feet from the TV I watch the most and the signal with the AT&T app shows it being very strong.

I am going to reach out to a few of my peers that are way smarter than me about digital buffering and audio/video over Internet. I can't get my head around a buffering issue on just a few channels can effect the level of audio being dynamic. Yes my skepticism is quite high. If I learn that buffering can indeed affect the volume level going up and down I will apologize to you.

to be continued...

how often does this happen to you? I tried tuning into Heroes & Icons, and didn't have any issue so I wonder if it is a rare case
