Wrong local channels on APP

I have searched and searched and spoken to DirecTV help for 3 days straight, and so far - no luck.  Our problem is this:

We have an RV where we have a DirecTV Receiver with a Satellite.  That works find and we get the local channels we want as we travel around.  No issue.

At home, we use the DirecTV app with ROKU.  In the past, we have had no issues with getting our local channels here; however, since we got home last August, we have not been able to get our local channels.  We get the Dallas news - which is 275 miles from where we live in San Antonio.  I've checked all the zip codes on the ROKU.  I've purchased new ROKU's.  I purchased a FireStick (same issue).  Therefore, I really believe it is a problem with DirecTV.  My billing zip code and my home location are correct on directv.com.  I've suspended DirecTV for several months and when restarted, the local channels are still Dallas.  I've traveled and reset the receiver several times - the local stations on the RV are correct but the local stations on the APP are still DALLAS!  There is no connection between the receiver and the APP - the receiver is not even turned on. It's not the TV or the ROKU or the FireStick because I get local channels with FUBO.  I'm tired of having to pay for DirecTV + FUBO (and now FUBO has dropped NBC so we have to have Peacock... )  Our TV's on the RV are too old to do the streaming although we are looking at replacing them all to get away from this issue.  Can anyone suggest anything that might work?

Thank you and I'm sorry if this issue has been posted before and I just can't find it!!

We apologize for the trouble with your local channels, @PJMurley. We appreciate the info you've provided and would like to investigate this. Please meet us in a DM so we can look into it further for you. Charles, DIRECTV Community Team

So... in case you have interest...  I did communicate with the number the DirecTV agent above directed me to and I was told that they have no control over the local channels on the app.  I used the app for a good 2 years without issue (correct local channels) before last year in August.  This is a totally unacceptable answer.  I will just have to find an alternative solution to DirecTV when we are home until I can buy all new TV's for the RV and will no longer need DirecTV.

@PJMurley - It's nice that they give us a priority code via a DM here on the forum so we don't have to wait on hold forever, but we still get the same customer support people that we would get without that code.  It's frustrating having to explain all your issues again to a new CS agent, only to find out that this CS agent is no better than the one(s) you spoke to previously.

@PJMurley - on a computer (or phone) inside your house, connected to the same wifi/internet that the Roku is connected to, open a browser and go to one of the "whats my ip address" websites.  Just search for that term in Google and many of sites will come up in the Google search.  Try a few of those sites to see what location they think your internet connection is coming from.  Its a shot in the dark, but it could be that last August your internet provider changed your IP address and now it looks like you're accessing the internet from the Dallas area instead of San Antonio.

If those "whats my ip address" websites indicate your location is closer to Dallas, there isn't anything you can do about it.  But it might help diagnose the issue.

I believe they use your IP address to identify your location, because when I travel outside my home I will get the local channels in the city I am in at that time, instead of my local channels at home.

You may be on to something.  I checked and it shows my IP address as Lubbock.  I've updated it - and now resetting the ROKU devices.  Thank you for this!  I'll update if it works!

@PJMurley - I don't know if there is any way for you to update the location.

When I check my home IP address on several of these whats my ip address sites, almost all of them come up with a different city.  But for me, all those cities are pretty close and would be the same local channels anyway.

You could ask your ISP, but you will probably get a customer service agent that is clueless and can't help you anyway.

One thing you could do is turn off the modem/router in your home for about 30 minutes, then turn it back on and see if they assign you a new IP address that is hopefully closer to home.  It's a shot in the dark, but worth a try.

How to change IP manually

The easiest way to change IP manually is simply to reset your router.

  • Jot down your IP address
  • Unplug the router for five to ten minutes
  • Plug the router in, wait for the reboot, and check the IP address
  • After rebooting, the IP address should be different
