Hide channels I do not get in guide
Sometimes after a search, more than one hit on the search term will result. We have (unknowingly) requested RECORD on a channel that we do not get, so that when we try to play a recording, we learn that we did not get it because we do not subscribe to that channel. This would not happen if only the channels that are in our plan appeared in the guide. The settings instructions to show only those channels we get seem not to work.

INFO > FAVORITES > CHANNELS I GET
You can also go into the menu and into the Favorites settings to set a custom list to additionally hide any channels you get but don't watch.
That updates the guide but not Search.

Right, that is what search is for to find all channels that program is on including On Demand. To record a series on a certain channel you use the guide to highlight it then press record twice.

I have followed the steps to set "channels I get" but they are ineffective.
Guide still shows channels not in my plan

Try a red button reset and regardless of what you set up for channels in the guide search will still bring up all channels.

It is not the SEARCH I am concerned with, it is the guide. We request DVR from the Guide only to learn later that we do not subscribe to that channel

Go into the menu and into Favorites. Setup a custom list. You can select in it "Channels I Get" to sort out most of the channels. Then uncheck any channels that you get but don't watch. As a note, everybody has the option for PPVs so those are included in "Channels I get".
After customizing the favorites list, return to watching TV. Then go INFO and then FAVORITES at the top of the screen and select the custom list you just finished setting up. Shortly the guide should be sorted accordingly.
If after that the Guide is still not sorted, then the box is having a problem. At that point I would suggest unplugging power from it for at least a minute. That clears any residual memory that may be causing the problem, as well as dumps the guide data. Within 24 hours the guide should be downloaded from the satellite. Go in and check that the custom Favorites list is set the way you want. You might need to switch to All Channels and then sort back to your Custom List to reactivate it. Hopefully at that point it is fixed.

Even with your Guide 1 or 2 that you set up, it still shows channels you can't get. Fix the software please!

All DirecTV boxes have an option to customize your viewing to show only the channels you get or even to further hide ones you have but don't watch. You set the Favorites on each box.
Option has been there for pretty much your entire time with DirecTV. So are you just not aware of how to do it or are your boxes having problems with the setting? For further help, please include the model numbers of your boxes.

Thanks - I am aware of this - however, I do NOT want to have to take the time to set up favorites one by one. I just want to open my guide and see ONLY the channels I get! Where is that feature??? Every time I try this - ALL those (Edited per community guidelines) spanish channels show up!!!!!! All of a sudden there are hundreds

Spanish channels are part of the channels you get so unless you set up a custom list you will always see them.

You do not have to set it up one by one. Apparently you are unaware of the easy way.
Option 1: While watching TV press INFO. Scroll over where it says Favorites. Then choose "Channels I Get" from the list. It may take a few moments/minutes for it to finish sorting.
Option 2: Go into the menu and into Favorites and go to Custom 1 (you can rename it if you want). Then choose "Channels I Get". That means only the channels you receive are checked. After that you can individually uncheck any channels you have but don't want to see. That is still shorter than checking every single one as you suggest.
Packages can still include Spanish channels. You do get them even if you don't understand the language. The only way to remove them is by a custom favorites list. As a note you are authorized PPV channels, so the custom Favorites list is the only way to remove those if it matters to you.
You don't have to setup a Favorites list every day. Just once and that can last for years. If you change your channels at some point than update at that time of course.
DirecTV is not going to read your mind and know what you do or do not want to see. It is up to you to customize your viewing list as you prefer. Refusing to set a list, and perhaps update it a few times in 20+ years if you change your viewing habits or what programming you have available, is just laziness in my book.
However if you already have a Favorites list, make sure it is selected when you go INFO > FAVORTIES. Just in case someone else in home switched to the other list (each box can have 2, such as for couples who don't watch the same thing) or put it back to "All Channels".

You can go to the channel then go to custom 1 or 2 and select add to custom 1 or 2.
