SignalSaver
I’m really frustrated with tech support. I think the problem is simple but getting a solution from them seems almost impossible. Here’s the situation
This area had a major hail storm that damaged roofs and siding. Our house was one of them. The roof was just replaced and that meant the dish had to be taken down. It is on the ground beside the house. No way it’s going to see anything useful. The other thing damaged was the siding on the house. That’s where the interface box is mounted. When they get around to replacing the siding that box will also be disturbed. It may be some time before the siding is replaced.
Initially SignalSaver kicked in and things still worked. You couldn’t tell there was no dish.
But, a day or so later it dropped out and the screen went to a message about updating the guide. I can still view previously recorded programs. Channel select does nothing but beep.
I can get to the settings page. The tech support guy was convinced there was a setting box there for SignalSaver. There isn’t.
The receiver status shows the wireless router is connected. It shows an ! for internet. The internet router is working correctly and has internet connectivity. Not sure if this is relevant.
So, 2 questions. 1. Why did SignalSaver work for a while and quit. 2. How do I get it working again?
Tech support never addressed either question. They did a lot of things that proved the antenna wasn’t getting signals. The agent talked a lot in accented English that was hard to understand and didn’t listen a lot.
Any ideas?

Could be the receiver missed the authentication signal from the sats and is turned off until a properly aligned dish is reconnected. This interface device may be the SWM splitter and it can be moved without any problems provided the coaxes are not disconnected.

That makes some sense but still doesn't explain why it worked for a while without a working dish. Maybe there's time limit in there somewhere that drops it. Oh well.
Thanks.

Signal Saver works when there is bad signal (such as too big a storm, etc.) and pulls the content from On Demand (if available).
When the box has been without signal for too long, it cannot check the authorizations for your service so you box disables services until resolved. As far as I am aware, there is no known length of time when that should happen. Many have reported service working for hours, days, or weeks after connection issue or unplugging from dish.
Of course if the box resets, it cannot check services on boot up so shouldn't work ever in that case unless you have connection to the dish.

Thank you both. SignalSaver is really just for short term (hours) outages then. Odd that the agent couldn't just say that it would drop out after a while and can only be reset via the dish. My suggestion to dish is that they also enable authorization via the Internet connection.

DTV was set up for use with everything coming from the sats as the internet was barely available in 1994 when they started and still doesn't need an internet connection to work. There is a time limit but DTV has never reviled how long it is as this is how they stop service to people that stop paying the bill. You just happened to be near the end of the current period.

No worries. You can use the Action List (3 dots to the right of your post) to Edit or Delete a post as needed (within a limited time of course).
I agree authorization over internet sounds great. I suspect the issue is they are so proprietary built for satellite that there is risk some people out there would use such an option to provide a false authorization and get service they are not entitled to.
