Signal interruption
When my son is downloading a PC game via the home WiFi internet, it causes a signal interruption with DIRECTV. The show we are watching freezes completely then periodically bounces to sound and freezes again. It might play a few seconds more then freeze again. Why and how does this happen? How is downloading via the internet interfering with a satellite signal? I’m just trying to wrap my head around this. Thank you.

You are correct, WiFi shouldn't cause interference with the sat signal. It is possible that the dish isn't aligned correctly and that is the cause.

If that show was from On Demand than DirecTV was receiving it from the Internet instead of the satellite. In that case the download was taking most of the bandwidth.
To fix you have a throttle/limit set on your son's game store (or individual game) for downloads and updates.
