Screensaver ads-“Screensaver” defined
To the DirecTV Advertising Department:
The “Exorcist” ad is yet the latest and best example that your department needs to look up the definition of “screensaver.”
A screensaver is a STATIC graphic meant to preserve any temporarily unused screen from unnecessary wear.
The FLASHING EXORCIST AD is the worst possible thing for a paused screen.
As a loyal customer, even through the onset of streaming technology and the recent loss of major network(s) (ie, Nexstar), I have remained loyal and silent.
But the flashing Exorcist ad on top of all the annoying pause ads (not screensaver currently)?!? It’s becoming too much.
There are, I imagine many of us who continue to stay with and pay good $$$ for your service.
Please reward us for our loyalty by at least being considerate to us. Coming back to a flashing screen does nothing but (Edited per community guidelines) your loyal customers off.
Stop it or keep losing us…

Static displays are what causes burn in as the station logo in the corner are most often burned into the CRT tube

A flashing screensaver could cause an epileptic seizure.
So, that was pretty idiotic by DTV... yes IDIOTIC, they can get their butts sued off.... someone better wise up
Screensavers need to change every so often, yes, but come on guys, don't drink the kool-aid.... change the picture every so often, the animated ads are not screensavers...
There's a way to block those and still be connected. Google around to find out how some people stopped it. (I don't want to point DTV on how to do this, because they will just make it harder)
I did it. Now all I get is the Google screensaver, nice pictures that change every so often.
Come on guys, we can tell some truth here, right?

Yep, the fine point is that 2 guys defended the very animated ADs as screensavers, necessary to prevent burnin
The reality is they are advertisements, and by changing they also function as screensavers.
But the first responses was defending them, the increasing advertising when on pause, etc. You should be able to turn the screen off when you pause.
What's next? The inability to use the mute button? Seriously.
Just want to bang that home again, I understand you 2 guys don't want to PO DTV, but you don't have to fall all over yourselves defending the flagrant advertising as a screensaver. There's truth.
My only screensaver is the real one from the settings menu, which are nice Google pictures that change once in a while.
It can be done without unplugging.

Thank you gregeusa!!!
For the sake of brevity, I didn’t mention that…
- I understand DirecTV needs to use ad space, especially considering that the viewing market is saturated with less expensive streaming options.
- And yes, I understand the “burn-in” issue!
Rotating static ads (or even those with light animation) is sufficient to prevent this issue and was ALREADY being done.
I learned to accept these ads, just like I was forced to deal with missing the entire Women’s World Cup, baseball games, the beginning of my local team’s NFL season.
But as the dingleberry on the crap sundae (last straw, etc), the pauses during my morning show are invaded by flashing horror ads!
Enough is enough!
I am disabled with a neurological disability (thank you again Greg…) and my peaceful (yet painfully difficult) mornings were worsened by the service that I have chosen to pay for. For a long (and loyal) duration.
Is it your motive to blame the customer (or send them to the BBB, or condescend with “burn-in comments that I totally understand and even accepted however annoying these ads are) when someone makes a very first complaint after years??
Sometimes, as difficult as it is for me to type this message, we customers have a need (read: right) to be heard.
All I feel is unheard and insulted put down (aside from one person, thank you!)
PS. Gre…I am very curious about your work-around solution to this problem, please 🙏🏽.
It’s clear that I can’t expect any other help from this forum, so thanks for your words of support and let me know how I might be able to contact you if possible off this.
