Purchasing DirecTV Stream device

I'm in the process of breaking up with xFinity and have settled on DirecTV Stream for our new TV service. I'm currently using Roku devices on our LG TVs with a free trial of DirecTV Stream. I'm a geek but my husband is far from it. I'm trying to make the transition as easy as possible on him and was going to purchase the DirecTV device for our primary TV to make navigation easier for him. I just found out that I apparently have to sign up for the contract version to do that. I'm wondering if I can use the streaming (no contract) version for a couple of months and, assuming all goes well, convert to the contract version. Is that possible? If so, are there any drawbacks to doing that, other than signing a 2-year contract?

Thanks - I know I could just use my own devices but was hoping to purchase a single DirecTV device for our main TV since the remote has direct access buttons for things like the guide, record, my library and the ability to go directly to a channel #. In other words, a DirecTV/Roku device combination for the household.

Awesome! At those prices, I'll probably buy more than one. If I remember correctly, xFinity blocked you from doing that so I assumed DirecTV might do the same. Thanks.

That's a good point. I guess I'm still in the cable mindset.
