Osprey vs. Gemini

When I signed up for Direct tv streaming service, I got 2 Osprey boxes. Apparently they are no longer available and have been replaced by the Gemini. What is the difference? Are the apps the same? Do they both use the same remote?  One of my Osprey’s isn’t working 100% because of a recent storm. I know that I can get one from eBay but maybe it’s time to upgrade.

The new devices are called "Gemini Air" and they are dongles (like a Fire Stick), not boxes. They only support Wi-Fi and have no ports.

Gemini is the new name for the Osprey (C71KW).

There is also the Gemini Air which is a dongle that is WiFi only.

A key thing about the old boxes is when they were last connected. Along the road of rebranding from AT&T TV to DIRECTV STREAM they changed the location updates come from. There was a transition window where it downloaded from the old location the address for the new one. If boxes didn't get that update, there is not a way to update it manually which bricks them as they can no longer connect.

As such, be wary of older boxes through eBay as may not have the needed update or are still on the previous user's account.
