Does DirecTV actually want customers? Worst customer service experience ever
Hey all. I really want to give DirecTV Stream a go. It has all of the channels that I need and no other streaming services do. It looks like it is a common thing to have credit card issues upon trying to sign up and I also had those issues today. I had to call and, of course, it was a bit difficult to understand the representatives. They had me on the phone for over an hour while I repeatedly phonetically spelled out every piece of my info out for them. In the end they said they couldn't process my order because it requires the leasing of a Gemini box. That is absurd. I can't seem to get a definitive answer online but their own website says it is not required for the streaming service. What is the deal with this? Do I need to rent this device from them or not? Thanks

Sounds like you are in a billing zip code or billing address not recognize by their system. Is this possibly true? Others have reported this issue in the past.

No. They said they verified my address. Plus we have satellite DirecTV at the address.

Be sure to use a different email address than your DirecTV Satellite account.

Yes they want customers.
As you have satellite service, make sure to use a different email when signing up for either of the streaming services.
As for required equipment or not, depends which streaming service you get.
DIRECTV STREAM is a bring your own device (BYOD). You use your own preferred streaming device (Roku, Firestick, or even 'smart' TV). You can even purchase their box if you want a more traditional interface.
DirecTV via Internet is similar to your DirecTV (the satellite service) in that you are provided the streaming box which is required and get the 24 month service agreement. So the box is 'leased' in the same manner as your current service (as DirecTV has never had a rental option).
