AT&T DirectTV

I'm being contacted from AT&T Direct TV w an offer to pay my DirectTV in advance for 1 year at 50% of my current price.  Is this a scam?

I verified it with AT&T- it's legit. They're not asking for payment info so I thought it was.

You were not contacted by DIRECTV.

You did not verify it with AT&T.

If you should get such a call, as soon as they tell you to buy gift cards, hang up.

Thank you!  I haven't called them back and will not do so.  I reported it on AT&T chat - they verified it as legit - interesting. I still wasn't comfortable enough to call back. Wanted to post it to make folks aware.

@heybetsy

DirecTV does not call you to offer a discount. You call the official publicly listed customer care number to discuss the account.

There is no 50% off bill, even when discounts were more common.

DirecTV never has you pay for service months in advance. Pay huge money, you get discount, might as well be "send money to pay taxes and you get huge reward from Nigerian Prince".

That scam usually requests you to pay by gift cards, which are similar to cash. Once given, it is gone.

If you spoke to a chat agent, not a 3rd party site, that rep was dead wrong. Some of them are poorly trained, and perhaps even outsourced. Though if that answer came from official chat, then I would avoid it at all costs as that sounds where there is a huge weakness in security.

How did you get to this AT&T chat that verified it as legit?  What URL did you visit, which menu items/buttons did you click.  We need to let someone know if they're giving out this bad info via an official AT&T channel.   Strictly speaking, an AT&T chat should have told you that you need to speak to DIRECTV and nothing more.
