Track Returned Equiptment
I dropped off my defective DVR at a UPS store and received an AT&T Equipment Return Receipt. How do I track the return of that equipment to ensure DIRECTV received it???

Does the receipt have the UPS tracking number on it?

It Does not have a UPS tracking number....
In addition to my account number, it does have a reference number, but that number was not a valid UPS tracking number when I tried it on the UPS website...

UPS/FedEx bulk ships them back to DTV so there is no way to track it, the receipt is the proof you returned it.

Not forever, but until after if DTV tries to charge you the NRF in the next few months or year.

The new return process is how AT&T does it for their equipment. They are not individual shipments so there is no tracking number, it is a bulk return.
Keep that receipt. Perhaps not forever, but I would suggest a matter of months at the very least.
