Recording and Deleting from the Genie 2 C41W-500

How can I prevent a program from being recorded in every room in the house?

And, How can I prevent recorded programs from being deleted from any room in the house?

If all you have are Clients (any model starting with C, i.e. your C41W) than you can't. They are not independent receivers, but extensions of the main Genie or Genie-2. Think of it as all TVs connected to one box.

This is a big reason I like the regular Genie line (HR34, HR44, HR54) as supports dedicated HDDVRs (i.e. HR24) that have their own controls, tuners, and recording space. The Genie-2 (HS17) only allows Clients, making it more restrictive, though a simpler setup for the company (and certain customers).

They don't, only the Genie records the programs, you can prevent minis from watching them with parental controls.

You can't minis are remote controls for the Genie so can delete programs.

Regular HDDVRs (last model HR24) haven't been made in years. DirecTV was pushed heavily to a Client-only setup.

HR24s are still available through 3rd party authorized retailers (such as Solid Signal) for the moment. They are $199 one-time lease cost, as only through DirecTV itself can you use your free upgrade (24 month service agreement either way).

Though be aware many have had issues lately getting those HDDVRs activated when from an Authorized Retailer.

But if you have the Genie-2 (HS17) it doesn't matter. It forbids all HDDVRs.

Thank you everyone who responded!

That's a bummer!

Guess I'll look into those independent boxes.

I assume they will cost more money! ☹️

Thanks Juniper!

It was the HR series (HR22), that I had to switch from. Directv sent me a notice about one of my receivers needing to be updated (it was a non HD DVR), otherwise I was going to lose certain channels upcoming...

The change was free, but after they installed that one Genie it messed up all my other receivers and I could not watch tv....

So, now I'm all Genie'd up and I don't like it!

But like you said, they made them (clients) because it's easier for them.....

Anyways, thanks for your comments

The HR22 did not have to be replaced, unless you went to the Genie-2 (HS17).

The original Genie line (HR34, HR44, HR54) supports HDDVRs HR20 thru HR24 (and special R22 as is like an HR22 in hiding being MPEG-4) and HD non-DVRs H21 thru H25.

It is my perception that AT&T pushed DirecTV to the Client-only setups to be easier for the company and to an extent simpler for the customer, by having an all-in-one (and you 'WILL' like it) setup. At least with the normal Genie, you can mix and match Clients and HDDVRs as preferred.

My hope is that the new co-owner (as AT&T has spun DirecTV off back into their own entity again), will bring back dedicated boxes (and have a bit more separation of controls for Clients as needed). So far nothing really has been heard on that front.

Sorry not the best answers for your situation. But whenever you have the chance to leave feedback for DirecTV, such as the next time you speak with official support, definitely make note that even clients need separate permissions (especially for mixed households or those who desire more parental control).
