Receiver?
I’ve been a Directv customer since the beginning, when there were 2 separate services (USSB) and I currently have a Genie HR54/500 500gigs which I’ve had since it came out, I only use 1 tv for Directv but enjoy the freedom of using the DVR. But it seems I’ve just about reached the end of the receivers life as I keep having to unplug and restart as it sometimes freezes and sometimes I can’t use the remote, at least a few times a day.
My question is should I continue with another Genie or is there something newer, better out there? Sure I’d love to get a free genie but I’m not sure I want to sign another 2 year service contract. Any thoughts you could give I’d appreciate.

The HR54 is the 3rd generation Genie. And the whole line since the original HR34 have a 1TB hard drive. It is HR22 thru HR24 that has the 500GB, and models before that were 320GB.
As you have to often reset and even unplug from power, that box needs to be replaced. You have two options:
1. Warranty replace the HR54. This would be $19.95 delivery.
2. Upgrade to the Genie-2 (HS17). This has 7 tuners and 2TB hard drive. It is a Headless Server tower, which means it doesn't go on a TV itself so would put a Mini Genie Client on the TV. This would come with a 24 month service agreement.
If you plan to stay with 1 TV or maybe a 2nd in the future, but no more than that, then I would consider the upgrade. This is because unlike the regular Genie line it does not support other receivers/HDDVRs from being on the account so the 7 tuners are a hard cap. Also it doesn't have an eSATA port so cannot use an external hard drive.
Either option you choose, just remember recordings do not transfer from the old box so be comfortably caught up first.
