Increasing my genie 1 capacity
How do I increase my storage without losing everything I have saved? I called directtv and they said I could upgrade to a genie 2 but what I have could not be transferred and would be lost. Is there any way around this?

We truly appreciate your responses @litzdog911, and @Juniper. You got it right, @LucyDolly2331. While you can't access your recorded shows if the eSATA drive is connected, you can unplug it so that you can still watch your original shows. Up to 12 TB or more is advisable for long-term use. Recordings cannot be transferred. They are encrypted to the exact DVR and hard drive.
The regular Genie line (HR34, HR44, HR54) supports using an external eSATA hard drive. While the internal one is 1TB, there is no hard cap to the external as some have used 12TB or more (though that much is overkill to me).
The external is used in place of the internal. It doesn't delete what is on the internal one, so you can go back to it if needed. Just be aware that eSATA port is not designed to have cord plugged and removed often.
As a note with revising the 3rd generation Genie (HR54R1) and all Genie-2 (HS17) since the first run of them, the eSATA port is removed. So unless the new co-owner changes direction on this, using an external drive is a legacy option.

Thanks for the quick response, @Juniper. We appreciate your input. Hi, @LucyDolly2231. Your recordings can't be transferred since each receiver has its own storage, but you can use an external eSATA hard drive to increase your DVR storage. Thanks for choosing DIRECTV. Note that using an external eSATA hard drive will replace your DVR's internal drive. You won't be able to access its recordings when the eSATA drive is connected.

As a note, this is a key point where the regular Genie shines over the Genie-2. Not only supporting external hard drives, but it supports regular HDDVRs unlike the Genie-2 which only allows Clients (Mini Genie, Gemini, RVU TV). And each HDDVR supports an external eSATA drive as well (max 2TB each for them).

I am not techie at all. If i understand this right i can get an external hard drive, fill it up with movies. While that is happening i have no access to the original downloaded stuff. Then i could remove the external drive and save it for whenever i want to add it again and watch the movies? I’ve read that the eSATA connection is not meant to be plugged in and removed over and over but a few times would be ok? Right?
