HR 24 HD DVR problems
I have two of the HR24 DVRs that have been exhibiting playback issues. When recording LIVE broadcasts, the playback will have sections of it that are garbled/pixellated. I don't have a better way to describe it! I can fast forward/rewind around the sections. I have tried leaving the recordings and hoping that it is just a bad sections of the hard drive, but that doesn't seem to matter. I have swapped the boxes between tvs, I have reset the boxes, I have deleted all recordings, etc. It only does this with recordings of LIVE tv events, not precorded tv shows. I have confirmed that the settings for the DirecTV antenna are correct, not affected by weather or obstructions.
As I understand from this forum, these boxes are not longer serviced or replaced by DirecTV. Any suggestions on repair?
I do NOT want to change to a client based (Genie) system.

What channel(s)? If the pixelation happens at the same spot when playing back the recording then it's most likely in the original broadcast. This is more of an issue with live sports broadcasts due to the greater demands on the video encoding and compression processes.

They have been warranty replacing with HR24s but not allowing upgrades to them. Until they run out of stock of course.
Only the Genie-2 (HS17) is client only. The regular Genie line (last model HR54) works with your HDDVRs.

While DTV doesn't want them back they are still leased and subject to the TOS which says you can't open them for repairs. You can get an external E-sata hard drive to replace the internal drive or contact weaknees.com about replacing the internal hard drive.

You can try using an external eSATA drive (max 2TB) in place of the internal one or checking with weaknees.com about replacing the internal.
Along with that you could also replace one of them with the regular Genie (HR44 or HR54 depending on stock). That would net you a 5 tuner 1TB hard drive HDDVR. It also supports the external hard drives, which has no hard cap (originally 4TB was suggested but some have used 12TB or more, though that seems way too much to me). It does add $3 Whole Home DVR if you don't already have it which allows you to watch the recordings from both boxes no mater which TV you're on. An upgrade comes with a 24 month service agreement starting the day the box is installed/activated.
As mentioned, it is the Genie-2 (HS17) to stay away from. That is the one that only allows Clients.

To all above - I have communicated with weaknees.com - does not feel its the internal drive and will not service this. I will work w/ DirecTV directly.
As for playback - yes it is the same spot on live recording. I had not experienced this issue before. Why would this occur only when recording the live broadcast vs. watching the live broadcast “live”?

Not sure why. But I personally experienced this issue a few years ago and it was an issue with the channel's broadcast. What channel(s) have this issue?
