Getting local channels with Genia and dome antenna
I was going to "upgrade" my old Directv DVR with a new Genie and the installer said if we do that, I will not be able to receive local channels with my dome antenna on my motorhome. And to get the local channels, I would also have to "upgrade" to a tall open antenna, which cannot be used while driving my motorhome. I find it hard to believe that the upgrade DVR is less technically advanced than the old model. Is that correct?

Dome antennas are obsolete as they are MPEG-2/SD-only. DirecTV has been working on shutting down the MPEG-2 feeds, so going forward a slimline SWM dish on a tripod/sled mount or the Winegard Trav'ler is needed.
Regardless of old dome or new dish, it only gets your locals when within your home spot beam. Once out of area you need a regular antenna on your TV to get locals within range.
However if your account has the legacy option of DNS stations (East/West Coast feed of major local networks), then an upgrade of equipment shouldn't affect that.
What are the models of boxes you have now and why were you considering a Genie? Just to be sure you get the right info, as a lot of agents currently do not understand legacy setups (or are pushed too heavily to upgrade to the absolute latest which is not necessarily the greatest).

Genies are SWM only and will not work on SD only dishes and since DTV removed the 18" dish from the sat setup menu you can't use a SWM8 module. The dome dish will receive the MPEG4 national feeds but there will be no local channels. You where going to lose the local channels anyway
