Gemini Remote Should Not Have Been Released Yet
Gemini is still in Beta testing although DirecTV doesn't acknowledge it. It fails at most tasks:
- While marketed as "control all your devices with one remote," it does not control many functions on a Samsung TV like apps and inputs.
- Control of apps is inconsistent and the apps lose track of what shows and episodes you're watching.
- It simply cannot recognize what other devices are connected to the TV, like USB drive and DVD player. So, we need to use the Samsung remote to watch apps and then the TV screen luminance is low when Gemini is used again. It seems only changing inputs with the Samsung remote back to HDMI1 (DirecTV) gets full luminance back.
- It does not successfully turn on/off the Genie (that is still in use with the Gemini) and when the Genie does sometimes turn off, the low luminance issue arises.
Furthermore, I spent over two hours on the phone with DirecTV customer support and then another hour with an on-site technician and we're still left will all these unresolved issues.
The only good thing I can say about Gemini is that the 4K video is a big improvement. And, it was (after the on-site visit) able to control the soundbar. Otherwise, we would have resorted to the old Genie.
Shame, shame, shame on DirecTV for putting their long-time customers though this kind of anguish all because inadequate Beta testing prior to customer release.

DTV remotes are only made to control the TV on/off, volume and the inputs not other TV functions. AFAIK the RC8X remotes don't control TV apps either. Only the RC6X remotes can control DVD players and some other devices.

The old white remote (RC6X) was "universal" as has a mode selection switch to control other media devices.
The Genie (RC7X or "peanut" style) remote that is for the 2nd generation (HR44) and later, and Gemini/Gemini Air remote (RC8X) are not intended to be universal. Instead they are for DirecTV box and TV only. And that means the basic TV functions (power, volume, channel) not the added functions of 'smart' TVs (controlling their apps).
The Gemini uses its own apps so the remote wouldn't be expected to use for a TV's own apps as would defeat what it is for. Now if you're having issues with the apps on the Gemini itself, that is another matter.
