External hard drive

I have a Genie HR54/500 HDVR. Is there a maximum size hard drive I can use?  I haven’t looked at the back of the rcvr yet (hard to get to), but the manual indicates it has a SATA port and everything I’ve read online says to use eSATA. .???

There are different versions of it, the HR54 and the HR54R1, the HR54 has the E-sata port, the HR54R1 doesn't, There is no known limit on the hard drive size.  You use an E-sata enclosure with a SATA drive.

HR54 like all HDDVRs before it has an eSATA port. Being a Genie there is no known hard cap. Early on it was reccomended up to 4TB, but with no official hard cap many have used 12TB or more. Though that seems too much to me.

There is the HR54R1 (so Revision 1) that is redesigned without an eSATA port. The Genie-2 (HS17) after the first run also removed the eSATA port (though no R1 added to model for those). So they dropped support of external drives going forward, I assume as a cost saving update.

HR24 and earlier have a hard cap of 2TB external.
