Directv C71KWX Gemini Satellite TV Receiver vs C61K-700 4K

Hello, I currently am using the Genie 2 along with the C61K-700 4k receiver.  I know this receiver is an older model.  However, I would like to upgrade to the Gemini Satellite receiver.  Can anyone give me some pros and cons of doing this.  I currently have an Oled Lg tv, using a sonos system.  Thx

Great question, @movieman2024. If your Genie 2 is connected to the internet, upgrading to Gemini will give you the best viewing experience. This device provides enhanced features, including easy access to your favorite apps, a 4K experience, a voice-controlled remote, and more! C61K is a Mini Genie, the C71KW the new Gemini, both are Clients, not receivers. They cannot work without the main Genie/Genie-2.

C61K is the most current Mini Genie. Only one that is 4K. The Gemini has the advantage of it is both capable of wired or wireless (Mini Genies are one or the other), and supports streaming apps (similar to Roku, Firestick, etc.). I believe that dual-nature is a big reason for it to be "Gemini" instead of "Mini Genie" though it follow the same model numbering.

Be aware the Gemini uses a different remote, the RC8X series.

Pro: Gemini can use streaming apps. Can be wireless to the main box if that matters (up to 80 feet under ideal conditions, though wired still suggested).

Con: Depends how you feel about the new remote. Also even if you have a free upgrade available, comes with a 24 month service agreement.

Hello, thx for responding.  If I would buy the receiver from Ebay and verify it can be put on my account, would I still have a 24 month service agreement?  thx

No, the 24-month agreement doesn't apply. Please note only used equipment can be purchased to own through eBay (used equipment must be owned, not leased, on the previous account). Also, beware of the risks. Used devices may have some issues, such as wear and tear, or may not be fully functional if they haven't been properly maintained or tested. If you want a reliable Gemini device with a warranty, consider getting a new one from us. John, DIRECTV Community Team

There is NO owned boxes with satellite. Hasn't been for years. Since the launch of the original Genie it is leased equipment with a 24 month service agreement.

If you get used from eBay then at best you are getting the DIRECTV STREAM version which is not interchangeable with satellite accounts. They don't have a way to just update firmware on request. At worst you are getting something one didn't know they had to return or is stolen equipment.

For satellite you get boxes from DirecTV (only where you get your free upgrades) or an Authorized 3rd party retailer (one-time lease-cost only). It is a 24 month service agreement either way.
