Directv box

Why after all of these years has DirecTV not figured out a way to replace the box, without loosing all of your recordings, settings and your recording manager setting. I know it is just a hard drive. They can be backed up and restores, or moved one one box to another.

It is very frustrating.

I’ve also been surprised that DIRECTV does not have such a feature. I believe dish network has this feature as well.

The exact why is unknown. Since the recordings are encrypted to their exact box, I suspect it is how the licenses and carriage agreements are written and they didn't want to overhaul that with all the networks and content owners.

To have a transfer option in the case of a warranty replacement or an upgrade is very desirable. Unfortunately there is no sign of them changing course. With DirecTV pushed into a single storage unit for the entire setup (Genie-2, HS17), it is less likely they will change that.
