autotune and other useful features missed on genie

I just upgraded to genie.....not a pleasure.  Alot of changes.  Trying to de-select which channels I don't wish to scroll threw took an hour for each box...slow response.  Cannot scroll channels a page at a time. Slow up down on each channel.  And, yes, my old boxes autotuned.  I want each station to pop up when it is on.  A feature I used everyday ....  Recording is fine, but I don't need to record all the time, I want auto tunning to station at appropriate time.  I do hope some of these wonderful features we use to have come back.  No need to respond.  Voicing what we want.

No DirecTV DVR has Autotune. It has been that way since the Genie was created. It is so niche a feature that many agents aren't even aware of it so unless mentioned by the customer, it doesn't come up in the upgrade discussion.

Since DirecTV doesn't make non-DVRs anymore, Autotune is a bygone feature. It has been replaced by DVR.

I am aware of what is on the upgrade.  I had two old boxes...connected through red white and yellow.  Those boxes had the features I am talking about.  Since I just got the mandatory upgrade to genie today, I am well aware of what I no longer have ..... As in my beginning of time boxes that were bought at the big box stores, these features were on those boxes.  Sorry you are a new comer and are not aware that the originals are still with DirecTV.  They were boxes with cards, not DVRs.  Again, I am an original DirecTV customer.  No need to respond.

No DTV DVR has ever had auto tune not just the Genie line so there is nothing to bring back.  Back before DTV had DVRs they added auto tune so people with VCRs (VHS/BETAMAX) could record their programs, then they partnered with TiVo to use their recorders with an IR blaster to change the DTV receivers channels so auto tune was no longer needed.  That partnership ended so DTV had to come up with their own DVRs.

@bodee

(correcting typo)

"has been that way since before the Genie was created."

And I am NOT a newcomer. I had my Philips boxes before they went to a universal standard instead of each manufacturer making their own design.

You posted in a PUBLIC FORUM. So your saying "no need to respond" means less than nothing because by posting you are inviting everybody to respond. If you didn't want responses, shouldn't have posted in the first place.

Point is only NON-DVRs have ever had Autotune. Even if you upgraded to DVR before the Genie existed you still would have lost it. They never made a box with both DVR and Autotune. It was a niche feature that not enough people used to make it worth it. Sorry you are in the small group, but that is how it is.

And all receivers have cards (clients share the card of the main Genie). They just no longer stick out the back asking to be damaged but are inside either behind the access card door or a slot on the side.

You may have been with DirecTV for a long time but you sure aren't as knowledgeable about it as you try to sound.

DirecTV 1994 began.  Boxes had red white and yellow.  Cards were in the back and faced the wall which were transitioned to the front behind a drop down door.  They were not DVRs.  Simply a box to bring satellite to your TV.  I have never had a directv dvr.  This "niche" feature as you speak of was standard and on all boxes as well as the other features obviously until the DVR. Go back and re-read as you missed the whole point to the comment. You have turned a comment into your platform to rant.  Do your research before you rant, and continue if you choose to do so in a post that you and a few others will see.  Let me ruffle your feathers further by stating there were no commercials....the gimmick in the beginning was pay for your TV channels -  no commercials.  DirecTV has come a long way.  Take the comment for what it was and rethink as maybe it is you trying to sound knowledgeable as there was no need for you to rant. Try to have a nice day in your niche world.

Once DVR came out, Autotune became niche. Most people wanted to record and watch on their own schedule. You tune in late, you can rewind. Autotune you turn on your TV late, you missed your show.

I am not disputing how it was. But most people are not wanting features like they were 30 years ago. Tech moves forward even if you try to stay in the past.

No commercials couldn't last. With networks increasing costs over the years it was either higher bills to the TV provider which means our bills would have been much higher or supplement with commercials.

Bottom line the tech and service has evolved. You either accept how it is going forward or change to something you feel is better. At '94 I was with a family member's account and later got my own, so I've experienced DirecTV just as long as you have. DVR came out and I loved it as it was so much better than Autotune. I can watch on my schedule instead of being a slave to the TV schedule.

And I would caution on your wanting to "ruffle feathers". Toxicity is against the forum guidelines as it is for discussion being civil. Fair you have a different opinion on Autotune, but let us at least keep the conversation mature as an adult.
