Adding a external drive to the Directv streaming service
I am trying to add a USB External Drive to my streaming box, but it keeps crashing and only shows the Directv space ship Logo when I have the USB Drive connected. I also have a Digital Audio connection to my home theater system and I don’t know if it’s too much of a power drain or something else. When it does come on it crashes and restarts often now with or without the external drive connected to it. I have looked at the support site, google and YouTube videos but all I can find is information about using an external drive for the Satellite DVR nothing to add on one to the DIRECTV STEAMING box. Also I recently had to install a new or different streaming device when the other one stopped working correctly and now this one is having issues, freezing up and shutting down, losing connection and sticking to the spacecraft logo. Is there any additional Apps or software that I need to install on the USB drive or to the streaming device from the google App Store? Please advise me about this issue and if you think that I will need another streaming device since this one is acting flaky. Thanks for your assistance with these issues.

DirecTV only supported eSATA hard drives. That has been discontinued going forward so new boxes do not have an eSATA port. The USB is only for powering a small device (like cooling fan) or in-house when being built/refurbished.

If you have a C71K DirecTV Stream box, it doesn't support external drives. Please clarify what service and what box you have.

It’s very clear in the first post that we are trying to connect a USB Hard Drive to the Defective Tv streaming box, it has a USB port, so I guess I can find a new box, a hdmi dvr recorder, or open the port myself there are software to do this. I currently have unlimited dvr but it seems to like to remove whatever I need to save after 9 months. Seems to me if I am paying for the dvr service then I should be able to keep it forever. Just one more reason to get rid of this $ hitty service once and forever. Don’t get me started with how many times a week it stops working, can’t have any other devices on the same network without it collapsing completely. Worst internet and streaming service ever!

DIRECTV STREAM only uses cloud DVR. It has never supported a physical hard drive.
Even if the C71KW was the DirecTV (satellite) version, they do not support external drives as doesn't have an eSATA port.
You don't own what is on the DVR. It is tied to the service so you aren't allowed to keep everything forever. Sorry but what you are trying to do is not available.

All the USB port is used for is powering small devices or charging them and for DTV refurbishing techs to access the troubleshooting menu.
