unable to cancel service

I have been trying to cancel my satellite service; but the menu at 800.531.5000 keeps repeating without sending me to an agent

When you call that number, say "cancel service" at the voice prompt. That should connect you with an agent.

We're sorry to hear you want to cancel, @leathermanmikie, and for the delay in getting an agent. We're sending you a DM, so our account specialist can help you with your request. You may also refer to How to Cancel DIRECTV, Pause Service, or Get a Better Deal for the cancellation process. Charles, DIRECTV Community Team

When you call and get the voice system say "cancel" and it should route you directly to the correct department. If it doesn't and just keeps repeating then there is either a technical issue with their menu system or something on your end of the call is not clearing communicating out (such as poor signal on the cell phone at the time).

Be aware it is the agent's job to find out why you're looking to cancel and make reasonable attempt to keep your business. Within bounds to address any pushback you have on their offer of course. In the end it is your choice, but do understand they have a job to do like any other business.

Cancellation goes through at the end of your bill cycle no matter when you call. There is no proration if you choose to stop using the service before then. So take a look at your bill and verify the service dates it is for.

Double check with the agent if you have time left on a service agreement. That way there is no surprise of finding out about an Early Cancellation Fee (ECF) after the fact. They should be up front about this, but I find best to be sure.

If any of your boxes are still a returnable model, you take them to a participating shipping location (along with your account number) for your free return. Keep receipt for that return. No tech goes out to remove anything. Everything but the boxes themselves are yours once installed (cabling, satellite dish on roof, etc.).
