Someone opened a direct tv with my address

Hi, I hope someone can help me with this. I noticed that I kept getting mail from DirectTV for a person that doesn't live here. I have lived here for the past 3 and half years, and never had directv. I called them, and they said I have to fill out an identity theft claim and file a police report; however, my identity has not been stolen and I can't file a fake police report. They said they can't do anything for me. What can I do? Thanks for the help.

Hello @lcguzman, thank you for contacting us regarding your billing address issue. I am here to assist you with resolving this problem. As you were unable to complete the Theft of Identity complaint form, we will contact the customer who has your billing address and inform them that the address needs to be corrected. To do this, I will send you a Private Note to gather your address information and work on resolving the issue as quickly as possible. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. You are receiving a bill for an account in someone else's name at a different address? Then yes, that wouldn't be identity theft. Either somebody made an error in the address or the account owner is trying to avoid taking responsibility.

When you get the mail, return to sender without opening. Glad the official help team is looking into this for you as historically there was no way for you to correct this as you cannot update someone else's account.

Now if you have seen the bill (not recommended as that is opening up someone else's mail) shows that both the service address, not just the billing address, is the same then something is really weird. But those should be different as you can send the bill wherever you want (doesn't change who is responsible for it) as people may use a P.O. Box, have two accounts (2nd home, vacation cabin, etc.), or mail isn't secure where the service is installed (such as kids getting in open mailboxes that are grouped together when they get off the school bus) and send it somewhere safer.

Hopefully it is just a typo on the mailing address. But if there is anything further where account owner is attempting to avoid paying their bill, then DirecTV will address that accordingly.
