Loyalty customer service
I had suspended my service due to financial reasons to avoid early cancellation fees but when we went in to At&T to get cell service because it was cheaper using AARP discount they recommended Directv streaming because it was substantially cheaper we signed up for it. When I called to cancel the satellite service the loyalty person stated that we shouldn’t have been allowed to change and that he could’ve saved me $70 per month by lowering our package. That’s ludicrous since I have way more with DTV streaming than satellite and saving a lot of money and even though I’m still with Directv he’s still charging me $180 early termination fee.

DirecTV and DIRECTV STREAM are different providers. Your service agreement is not transferable. You are canceling DirecTV and going with DIRECTV STREAM.

Suspending service only extends the contract.

Juniper, they are not 2 different providers but thank you for your response.
Shannon02, I knew that but had to do it for financial reasons that have changed since putting it on hold. My point was that I was not advised by AT&T that I would have to pay ETF and Directv could waive the fee as I’m still a loyal Directv customer.

Well…as expected, they are not willing to waive any portion of the fee and the only reason I am staying with Directv Streaming is because I like it so much better than the Satellite. I will definitely file a complaint with someone even if it’s the BBB.

AT&T owns U-Verse, DirecTV, and DIRECTV STREAM. They are not interchangeable as they are three separate TV providers that share an owner. The service agreement is for the specific provider, does not cover all under the owner.
So yes your ECF is valid as you are canceling and going to another provider. Their sharing the same owner makes no difference. The DirecTV rep you spoke with should have informed you as such.
Suspending service pauses the service agreement. It only counts down during active service. Suspending for a few months and then canceling saves no money compared to if you just canceled instead of suspending. However suspending for a few months and then resuming saves money during those months, and some do so seasonally if there is a time of year they hardly would use TV so only paying for the months needed.
It is not about willing to waive the ECF. The agents simply cannot do so as it is completely valid. Just be prepared for no different answer with a BBB complaint since there was no error.
