Extra Sports Channels

I am paying for the extra sports channels in the 720 series for baseball.  Yesterday, the Yankees/Orioles game was listed on 748.  Went to 748, it referred back to WJCY in Charlotte channel 46.  WJCY is a Nexstar station which is in negotiations with Directv and was not showing any sports.  The game wasn’t carried on YES (631) or MASN (640).  So, even though we’re paying for extra channels, we couldn’t watch the game between our two favorite teams.  I am very disappointed and will likely not be paying for the extra channels another year.

If a local channel has the rights to that game then no other channel can broadcast it, it is blackout.

Subscribing to the Sports Pack does not override blackout rules.

The Sports Pack is primarily for college sports. Out-of-market professional games on those Regional Sport Networks (RSNs) are always blacked out.

For those in Family, Select, and Entertainment, the Sports Pack is a cheaper way to get your in-market RSNs instead of raising up to Choice.

If a game is in-market where it would normally be on the RSN, but a specific local in your area carries the game, then you watch it on the local regardless if DirecTV has it or it is temporarily pulled during carriage negotiations. The channel still has rights to the game where you live, which is what Nexstar and others use for additional leverage.

When it comes to MLB they have additional rules for weekend games. Plus Apple got some exclusive rights as well, making MLB have the most complicated blackout rules of all professional sports.

Fox has certain rights for afternoon MLB games on Saturdays, ESPN has the same rights for night games on Sundays, and starting for the 2022 season, Apple has the same rights on Friday nights for two games each Friday to stream on its Apple TV+ platform.

Bottom line is Nexstar holding out for more money does not change the broadcast rules that they have the rights to certain games. They take priority over the RSN.
