Billing increase

I called to get a promotion because I do not want to cancel DIRECT TV.

The representative said there weren't any but I could lower my package. Now keep in mind I did lower my package 2 months ago. I told her I have to disconnect if my bill was this high and she set me up for a disconnect!! Didn't even  try to keep me as a customer!

I am now looking at dish network.

AT&T CEO said years ago there will no longer be any discounts for existing customers.

Good for you, I’m glad it wasn’t too annoying to cancel. I hope you enjoyed the DIRECTV. Be sure to return the receivers to a participating FedEx or UPS location with your account number, and definitely ask for a shipping receipt so you can avoid being charged a non-return fee.

Your bill is too high to be comfortable for your budget so you called to discuss lowering it. Logical start.

No discounts were available, leaving you with the option to reduce package. You already did so a couple months ago so I can see this would be annoying to do so again so soon.

Discounts are temporary perks. They are not guaranteed to always be available, even upon looking at canceling. In the end we pay what the service costs.

It is not that the rep "didn't" try to keep you. Simply, they couldn't provide what you wanted. In the end they are a business. You are not entiled to discounts. TV is not a life necessity. If you cannot afford it then you reduce service or go without. That is the reality.

Remember Dish Network, and any other TV provider, are businesses as well. Networks increase costs to them year after year. So they are not going to pay you to be a customer as that is not how the real world works.

Yes I understand this. I can simply go to Dish network and pay for the same thing 1/3 of what Direct is charging me.

3 years ago I paid under $40 for more channels, now my bill being over $100 for less is obsurd. I have been a direct rv customer er for 8 years and have never paid this much there has always been a promotion.

Switching for a better fit is fair enough. Just make sure to check the order confirmation throuroughly to get an expectation for after the intro price. And be prepared for the same price increases to evetually happen.

Under $40? For the entire bill? That was some insane discounts as even the 2nd lowest package is above that, never mind TV fees, receiver services, taxes, etc. At that point they should have been loosing money on you. This is exactly why the CEO announced a few years ago that discounts would be pulled back as in too many cases they were abused.

To be clear, we don't expect discounts to be completely gone. But after they addressed problem accounts, and recovering from the pandemic that hit shortly after that annoucement, they would be more in moderation. Actual cost with a nice small discount here and there would be closer to the norm I think. For some customers this will be a hard wake up call when the gravy train ends.
