WiFi Connectivity Problem with Gemini Air

Hello all,

I’ve been a DirecTV satellite customer for 11 years and I’m now making the switch to streaming.   My problem is I cannot get any of the Gemini Air receivers I ordered to connect to my WiFi.  Each of the 3 Gemini Air receivers I’ve tried acts the same: it will power up, it pairs with the remote okay, it goes through the initialization process on the screen, it searches for active WiFi networks and it sees my WiFi network.  When I select my network to connect to, the receiver acknowledges my selection, shows a processing screen for a minute or two and then comes back with an error message that it cannot connect. I never even get a chance to enter the WiFi password.

My network has a Netgear Nighthawk RAX120 router in the basement and a Netgear Nighthawk EAX80 extender set up with an ethernet cable as an Access Point in the family room.  There is no problem with WiFi signal strength.  The main TV is directly above the RAX120 router in the basement and in the same room as the EAX80 extender.  I have high speed fiber internet service.  All of my other WiFi devices have no problem connecting to my WiFi.

I called Customer Service and they were no help in attempting to try to figure out whether there is some setting in the router that conflicts with the Gemini Air.  They just walked me through power cycling my routers and the Gemini Air and I got the same non-connectivity result.

I suppose it is possible that I got 3 bad Gemini Air receivers.  But I’m thinking it’s more likely that there is some incompatible setting on my WiFi network that the Gemini Air needs to make a connection.  I know how to log in to both of my routers and I can see some changeable settings in the control panel that affect WiFi connectivity.  Does anyone have any suggestions on router configuration settings that I might try? Thanks.

Hi, @twofanman. We apologize for the issues you're having connecting the Gemini Air devices to your internet. It is unusual that all three Gemini Air devices are not working. Sounds like OP already tried that.

Maybe try different security settings in the router(s)

I wanted to report back for anyone interested or for people with the same problem in the future.  This was a connectivity issue with router settings that were incompatible with the Gemini Air devices currently being shipped.  I had to resort to trial and error with the router settings and was eventually able to get my first device connected and functioning yesterday.

I originally had the Security settings on both my routers set to “WPA3-Personal”.   I changed both to “WPA2-Personal [AES]” and now I was finally able to progress to the network password entry page on the RAX120 router.  But I still could not connect on the EAS80 extender.

I noticed that the EAS80 router had the 2.4GHz network and the 5GHz networks separated.  They had different SSID names and settings whereas the RAX120 router (which was now able to connect) had the two networks combined with the same names and settings.  So I changed the SSIDs on the EAX80 to be the same and I selected yes for the “Enable Smart Connect” option.  That made the difference and I was able to connect the Gemini Air to the EAX80 extender router and get through the installation.

I hope this helps someone in the future.

I have my 2.4 and 5ghz Netgear router settings separate with two different ssid's ...and my Gemini Air connects fine to it.
