DirecTV streaming box
I bought our second box so my wife can use it with DirecTV streaming service and have channel numbers. She memorizes the channel numbers she uses most.
If we quit DirecTV streaming service and they won't buy back this box what good is it. I've heard it's an android based device but I bet it's propiertory to DirecTV and there's no way to use it for any other device like Hulu live or YouTube live.

The answer is yes, you can keep using the DIRECTV STREAM Box even after canceling your streaming account, the box allows you to download third party apps like: Hulu live, Youtube TV, NETFLIX, Etc...
And regarding the question about if DIRECTV bough back the box, the boxes are property of each customer so you can dispose of it as you want
Also, @bcbsncjlj thank you so much for your accurate and prompt response

You are right. Requires you to sign-in to the service in order to use the box for other apps. It's not like other devices where you load the device and select an app. If you can not login then its a brick.

I own one box but the second one came with the service. So if I cancel DirecTV streaming service they will want this box back I assume since I don't own it, correct?

I really doubt I leave DirecTV streaming I'm just curious about the boxes since I own one and the other came with the service. I've been looking at Roku's box in case I had to return equipment should I stop this service. I was told that by this May I should be able to switch to a no contract deal with DirecTV streaming. We just lost DIY channel and the replacement channel Magnolia is actually a pay per month app. So that's out. Also lost the free HBO max when ATT TV dropped out and DirecTV streaming took over.
Philo seems to be a better deal because of the cost, but I'm still exploring. It's a matter of budget when your on a fixed income with other utilities increasing as well.

My boxes both work as long as you don't sign out and don't take a picture of the QR code to become a DirecTV streaming service member again. Just use the apps icon box click on it and all apps that you've downloaded are there. My wife's TCL Roku smart TV does not even need a box or the HDMI cable. So I've removed all that and just left the internets Ethernet cable attached from the router to the TV because wired works more efficient then wireless. My box works fine with my 10 year old Vizio E series TV but I've ordered a Black Friday deal on a Roku box anyways because I like the way the apps work on her Roku tv and I like the Roku app. Then I did some more searching and found a nice 40 inch Onn Roku Smart TV deal at Walmart for $98. That's a great price for a smaller tv for my little den room. Now I'll probably be sending the Roku box back to Amazon, duh. Should have found the TV deal first🤣

How did you contact the rep? Was it at an AT&T store, a DTV online rep, a DTV phone rep, or a 3rd party rep? And did you make clear that you were beyond the trial period when you cancelled? (Because if you cancel within the trial period you can indeed send your DTV streaming device back and get a refund for it.) Did the rep give you instructions on how to ship it back - normally there is a pre-printed shipping label with RMA numbers.
