So is the winegard G2 obsolete now? I'm just asking because I saw a lady is selling one online for $35. Also I do still have an h24 along with my 44 for my main room. After all these years I still mainly take either one of them camping just for the recordings. Yes they still never stopped working even though for years and years they said it could stop anytime. But it hasn't yet. Anyway my main reason here is the original question... Are the G2s obsolete now Even for an h24? Thank you.

Here is the case. You will no longer be able to view your local channels with the G2, as local channels on the directv satellite at 101W (the only satellite that the G2 can receive) have been shut down since they were SD/MPEG-2 outdated broadcasts.
HOWEVER, you will still be able to receive the SD duplicates of channels ranging from 80 onward (disregarding the local channels). This should continue to work for the next couple years.
Your H24 receiver should work to receive the national channels (80 and onward) in standard definition using the Winegard G2, but you will NOT be able to view your local channels as local channels in standard-definition have been shut down on 101W.

Wow thank you very much for the quick response. I asked the same question on a different post but you can just ignore that one if you want. And as far as local channels go I barely ever turn them on at home anyway. I'm mainly thinking that it would be nice to watch a specific news channel (Don't want to get political on here) and the mornings or whenever we're taking a break from riding in the sand dunes or wherever we're riding... Again thanks for the info. And I've never owned a traveling receiver but I'm assuming that G2 would still have the technology to find the signal on its own I'm hoping.

Yes, the G2 can find the signal on it’s own as long as the dish is stationary.

@Juniper
I had heard from Stuart Sweet over at Solid Signal that DIRECTV has no intent to shut down NATIONAL MPEG-2/SD content on 101 at the moment. As we know, local channels are already gone.

Right, but they will be sent in MPEG4.

It still is, all channels on the 101 will be sent in MPEG4.

I believe the H24 receivers will work fine with them. I have two H24-700 working on my Intellian I3 and a H24-100 working on my deck with a 18 round dish.

AFAIK all SD in motion and SD dishes will still get the 101 MPEG4 signals.
