Will Genie (HR54) record streaming Directv?

I have a problem with satellite reception - random loss of signal due to construction in my area.  Will the HR54 record streaming DirecTV?  I like the idea of having recorded material in my possession rather than in the cloud.  But I haven't seen any descriptions of the HR54 say, specifically, "records streaming DirecTV ".

DirecTV will not record anything from streaming. The record feature only is for what is delivered by satellite.

If while you are watching the signal gets interrupted, a message about Signal Saver will come on screen. Only available if the network has it available to download from their On Demand at that moment. If this happens in the middle of the night while you're sleeping you miss out as you cannot select it manually.

Regular HDDVRs (I.e. HR24) have 2 tuners. They can record up to 2 satellite channels at the same time.

Genie (HR54 is 3rd generation) has 5 tuners. So it can record up to 5. Remember using the Picture in Picture (PiP) feature uses a tuner (since you're tuned into a 2nd channel at the same time), and if you have any Clients (Mini Genie, RVU TV, Gemini) they each use a tuner for their channel being watched since they don't have their own.

Unfortunately DirecTV isn't setup for a long term issue as the construction crane parking you mention. The Signal Saver is just a temporary solution when watching in real-time. It will not help your recording. Best you can do is if interrupted to see if the program is available On Demand to download later, but that is not a guarantee.

DirecTV recordings are on the box itself. If you are watching TV and signal interrupts, than it uses Signal Saver to download the program (if the network has it available).

However this is a live feature, so has to be selected when it happens. It will not automatically do so when recording.

(Moved post as DIRECTV STREAM is a streaming-only TV provider completely separate from satellite)

If your HR54 is connected to the internet, you probably save it via an OnDemand channel.

I need to make sure I'm getting the info right.  My problems with satellite signal loss can extend for hours due to cranes parking at night in such a position that they interrupt the signal.  Streamed Directv seems to solve this problem.  But how do I record movies that play at 3AM tomorrow or every episode of  2 TV series that are streamed at the same time?  Which HD DVR will record streaming Directv like my satellite DVR does (when it's working)?  Will the satellite DVR (HR24?) record streamed Directv?

Again, no. The only way to "record" a streaming show/movie is to download it from that channel's OnDemand channel. This, of course, requires that your HR24 has an internet connection.

If this is an ongoing problem for you, perhaps you should switch to DirecTV Stream service instead of satellite.

Juniper,

Thanks,  Not the answer I wanted but now I know.  I guess I'll look at other cable companies.

You're welcome. Sorry it wasn't the right option for you but at least you got the info to make an informed decision.

Perhaps relook to the options within the next year or two. Right now DirecTV and DIRECTV STREAM (or DirecTV via Internet) work separately (including physical DVR vs anything cloud), but with AT&T selling off their part we are curious what new options might be implemented. Haven't heard anything yet, but who knows what the future holds.
