Why is Direct Tv asking me to return equipment I own?

I cancelled my Direct TV account and now they are telling me i need to return equipment. I bought my equipment years ago and the Customer Service rep even told me to dispose of it. Now they're telling me they will charge me if it's not returned.

What are the models of each box?

DirecTV hasn't had to the option to purchase to own for many years. Some models never had an owned option. And what might have been paid was the one-time lease cost, not purchase to own price (i.e. regular HDDVR $199 lease vs $499 to own).

It was definitely purchased not leased and I've had it about 16 or 18 years. It's not a DVR.

Again, what’s the model number? Owned or not, hard to believe a receiver that old would need to be returned.

If it is an SD only model then it is definitely not returnable.

With it being that old, likely you got generic return instructions. Too many agents do not check the exact model number against the returnable list and some automated emails on cancellation are generic as well.

What are the exact model numbers? Even if was leased, if it is too earlier a model you wouldn't return it anyway.

There is only one box and the model number is H23-600.

H23 is an earlier generation HD non-DVR. Cost to own (when still an option) was $399 and lease cost $99.

Regardless, that is an older model that is no longer returnable. Remove the access card before you recycle it. If you don't get an envelope to return the access card within 1-2 months, you can securely dispose of it like you would a credit card.

And what about the email that they're going to charge me for it if I don't return it?

You can hang onto it until they charge you for it then take it to a UPS/FedEx store to scan it in and keep the receipt and they will return the NRF.

That email should be generic regarding returnable equipment. If it says specifically you have to return the H23, then the system is wrong.

All that should be returnable are SWM-only boxes, which is only Genies and the H25. The original Genie (HR34) is no longer returnable, and I believe the same for the 2nd generation (HR44). The H23 has been non-returnable for years.

@toysmost

Being the last regular HDDVR, I could see them wanting HR24s back. However they quite some time ago made boxes that were capable of using the older setup non-returnable.

HR22s and especially HR20s, have been non-returnable for years.

Did you get generic return instructions or did it specifically say each of those models must be returned? In either case once deactivated they cannot be transferred to someone else or reactivated so returning is the safe way to go.

I have had 4 receivers on my account for years that we no longer have because they came in 2 RV's that we purchased built into the cabinets. No way to remove them and we sold them 4 and 2 years ago. Now they want to charge me for not returning equipment that I never signed a lease on, just added to our account when we bought the RV. Help!
