upgrade Directv system

some guy named "Jack" from DTV, Denver area called to upgrade our Directv system. He said that our audio and video would no longer be compatible with the TV channels  and that we would start losing channels. He didn't ask for money but said something about a $30/month discount and a one-time $250 fee to be paid later (?), He knew our last payment and billing date! I called Directv Tech and they said that it did not sound legitimate. Does anyone know if this is a scam or should I call him back?

@hnklbn

That was a SCAM. DirecTV NEVER calls you about equipment or to offer discounts.

Those crooks are using a real situation to trick who they call. DirecTV is shutting down the MPEG-2/SD-only feeds. To get the complimentary swap you call official DirecTV customer support. Though you can list the model numbers of your boxes so other experienced customers can advise if you must call or if there is any particular swap options to be careful of.
