Unable to program Yamaha Sound Bar

My parents have a new DirectTV remote, I've spent an hour so far attempting to program the remote to turn the sound bar. I'm hoping you can provide some insight into problem. They have already ( at some previous point ) programmed the remote to control the Visio TV set.

I have attempted to follow these instructions:

https://www.directv.com/support/satellite/article/000092856

question, does this step: Power on the device you want your remote to control. require that you turn on the device using it's own remote? I am wondering if the directTV remote is trying to clone the signal.

We were not successful using these 3 options, so we tried the following instead:

MENU->SETTINGS->REMOTE SETUP

Select AV1, choose AUDIO DEVICE, choose YAMAHA. We are taken to instructions that tell us to

  • Press MUTE + SELECT
  • Change Mode to AV1 on remote ( There is no way to do this, that I can see )
  • Enter 5 digit code
  • Press Power

This turns off the TV, but not the soundbar.

  • Press Power

Turns on TV

  • Try Next Code

Something weird happens here, we get a "Remote Control Setup Complete" message, and are asked if we want to set up another device. Sound bar does not power on/off with TV.

What DirecTV remote model number?

DVR/Receiver model number?

Likely, the cheap DirecTV can't control that soundbar directly. But perhaps the soundbar supports "HDMI CED Power Control" that can synch power on/off across HDMI-connected devices.

I don't see a model for the remote, but including a photo

Even if it cannot control power, shouldn't it be able to control volume level? I've set up plenty of universal remotes in my day ( I use a logitech harmony at home ) , so I'm not like "tech challenged" or anything. These instructions seem like they are made for a different remote. Is there a more expensive/better functioning remote that can be used with their DirectTV?
