Receiver/Dish compatability

it does not matter what LNB you get, as long as you change the receiver to the proper settings on the receiver satellite set up menu.  the above list is correct, but since you are only connecting one receiver, you don't need the 4 way SWM splitter.

If the receiver is going to be hooked up to an HD TV, then you will have to have atleast 3LNB 18X20 to get the HD picture. You won't be able to get your locals when you travel outside your zipcode. You can request distant network stations that originate from the New york area, but there is alot of paperwork to fill out and they are not free.

So what is the difference then between the 5LNB I have here at the house with what looks like it has 3 eyes to it, and the 3LNB that has 1 eye to it?

The only difference is that the 3-LNB Slimilne can't receive the 110 and 119ºW satellites.  That's usually no big deal, unless you want the Spanish Package or your local SD channels are beamed from 119ºW.  And the 3-LNB Slimline is a bit easier to align. 

The SL5 picks up the 110 and 119 satellites and the SL3 does not.

SL5, 99, 101, 103, 110, 119

SL3, 99, 101, 103

Note that the "3LNB 18X20" dish referenced in a prior post is a SD only dish that picks up the 101, 110 and 119.  It was capable of limited HD some time ago, but that has been discontinued quite a while ago.

So.....it looks okay if I go ahead and purchase my original post listing above?  I'm just a beginner and only want to purchase what's necessary of course.  Am I allowed to post the quote I have for above parts?  And/or ask if you know a reputable purchase site.......or should I just do my own research on purchasing costs?

dcd - I won't need the splitter because?  How will I hook up the two tv's then?

Each DirecTV Receiver needs its own coax cable from your dish.  No splitters allowed.

I am confused now.  the OP posted that he was getting a SL3S LNB, which is a SWM LNB, but only mention one TV.  so what kind of LNB are you getting? 

Good point peds48.  If it's a SWM dish, then a SWM splitter should be ordered.  If not, each Receiver needs its own cable from the dish outputs. 

Sorry about the confusion.  Original question was that I wondered if I could get by with an SL3 which my son has and gets HD/DVR and local.....but I don't know what his receiver is.  But I have (as posted) the HR23-700.  Sadoun recommended the SL5 SWM and splitter.  Do have 2 tv's in camper.......Our hookup here at home is separate cables per tv in LNB.  Thanks, D
