RC73 will not turn off Samsung 5300AFXZA TV

I programmed my Direct TV the RC73 remote to work with the Samsung 5300 TV.

Everything works OK except powering off the TV.

When I press the Off button it causes the TV Box to shut down and the screen goes blank.

After about 10 seconds I get the select source screen on the TV.

I need to use the TV remote to turn the TV Off

Hi There @whd41a,

We can help with your remote.

Now if you look at your remote, you should see a slider in the center portion of the remote. That slider controls the different devices connecting to it.

If the power button is only turning off and on the receiver, that means that the slider is in the incorrect position.  What you will need to do is move the slider to the TV position and try turning off the TV.  If it still doesn't work, make sure that you are able to use the other functions such as, volume, to see if it controls that. If that doesn't work, then a reprogramming is in order.

To program the remote correctly, please use this great article: Programming Your Remote.

The RC73 remote does not have a slider button as mentioned in the solution.

I have a question about the RC-73. We got a new RC73 and no longer does the on switch toggle the TV set off like it used to only the off switch are old RC73s still do that is there a setting I can change?

Nope, get an older remote with the slider. They are cheap.

Neither one of the remotes has a slider. In fact they look identical and are marked with the same RC73. That's why I thought there was a setting. There is a setting to leave the receiver on rather than off after four hours, but I like that feature on, since I like to save electricity. It just seems the two remotes must be different, even though they say they're the same.

The RC6X works somewhat on the Geni Mini, have not tried on the Gemini, but cheap, worth trying $15

You could try manually entering 12051. To manually enter press and hold mute and select buttons together until light double blinks. Enter 1 and pause a couple seconds then enter remaining digits. Light should double blink again to show acceptance of code.

Did not work using those code numbers. In fact I had repeat program the TV three times Vizio to get it to work again so I'm just going to use the TV remote to shut off I believe the remote has an RF pattern in the back of it that tells me it's different than our other ones even though it says RC73. Again thanks but they've done something different in the circuitry to the newer remotes be happy I guess.

Yes & No. What you read in black & white isn't always so.

So the scientist I am did an experiment. I brought up the old remote which had a poorly functioned button and it had the Vizio television on/off - volume control still intact.

I turned off the Vizio tv by toggling the on button of the RC73 remote. Viola, television turned off. I press again and it turns on.

Now the new RC73 remote still only shuts the tv off if you push the off button. The on button only turns on the televsion and of course the DVR box if it is off, otherwise it stays on.

Assumption: It is probably desirable only to turn off a box or tv if you push the off switch. If you push the on switch it is best that it ONLY turns on the tv and/or DVR device.

Now I reprogrammed the old remote. The 'smart' RC73 remote & DVR software find a Vizio television and program the one choice it shows.

Now the old remote only turns on the Vizio television as well as the DVR, if it is off.

So yes, I believe the circuitry is probably the same.

Note the two remotes both RC73, say RC73 on the front. All the buttons physically look the same as well as the text on them.

On the back a different observation. The old remote is shinier white and labled, 'Made in China'. The new remote has a more matte (like a photograph) texture.

Also, on the new remote is imprinted on the back dimple RF type, (not looking at it now) but the old remote was just a dimple and I have a basement sticker on it, to not confuse with the other remote, which is obviouser newer. (Hope the text isn't duplicated. But three pictures help explain, the difference in the two remotes. The last image cropped shows in 'white' made in China on the left. So packaged differently. But as the experiment shows that re-programming the RC73 to the Vizio television removed the toggle function of the 'On' button.

Now I will do some real work, lol. It doesn't matter to me.
