Both HR34 (Genie) and C31 (Mini Genie Client) are the 1st generation. Genie and Mini Genies technically have a different set of software. What is your concern or issue that you have causing you to look more into the software?
HR34 stays on the old GUI as doesn't have the hardware to run the new software. Though it is known for system slowness and overheating because of an inefficient design. Later models have better cooling and a processor improvement.
C31 being a Client has a separate set of software. Like all Clients, it accesses what is on the Genie being that is the brain of the system.
If you ever need to tell DirecTV the Genie stopped working they would warranty replace it for $19.95 delivery. Would get either the HR44 or HR54 (or revised HR54R1) depending on stock. Be aware that future models did away with the software, and then hardware, with being connected to a phone line so no more Caller ID on TV. And recordings do not transfer from the old box so be caught up first if you can.

Clients have their own software.
The C31 has 0x1BE5, the HR34 has 0x10E1 If you still have either you should update them as they are way to slow.

What new software? Hasn't been updated in years and is no longer returnable. The HR34 is the last one made that uses the old GUI.

The C31 and HR34 are now very old. If you're having issues it's best to replace them with newer Genie equipment.
