Question about Gemini hookup

I got an email offer for a free Gemini. I was looking into it, and I'm having trouble figuring out how it would hook up. I have an HR-44 hooked up to one TV. The instructions I see online show that the Gemini connecting to the TV through HDMI. Does that mean that I disconnect the HR-44 from the TV? How does the Gemini communicate with the HR-44?

Do you need a DirecTV box on a second TV? That's what the Gemini would provide. If you're just using the HR44 you don't need to add a Gemini.

DTV sort of does it for you they turn off the audio/video outputs of the HR44 but yes,  While you can stream 4K programs the HR44 can't get DTV 4K channels.  It is connect to the HR44 with coax with a DECCA BB being needed or you have to buy a WVB that is connected to the SWM splitter to use DTVs separate WiFi network.

Thanks for replying. I only have the one TV. So, if I understand you correctly, there's no point in getting a Gemini if I only use one TV?  I had thought that the Gemini would let me access my streaming services without having to switch inputs. Currently I use a firestick on the TV's second HDMI input for that.

Your Firestick provides excellent streaming functionality. No need for a Gemini box.

litzdog911 - Thanks for the information. I think you're right, and I'll just stick with my firestick.

shannon02 - Thanks for your reply, although I didn't quite follow it all. It does seem that I'd have to buy another piece of equipment, without any gain in my current functionality. Thanks again.

Yes, if you plan to use the Gemini in a 2nd room you’d either need a wireless video Bridge (WVB) to connect the Gemini wirelessly to the HR44, or you can do a wired coaxial connection with a DECA BB which essentially takes the coaxial connection from the SWM splitter and turns it into an Ethernet connection directly into the Gemini’s ethernet port.

detuch254 - Thanks. What if I want to use it in the same room; i.e., using it on the same TV as the HR44 to allow me to access streaming services? I'm unclear on how it would connect.

I believe that the term you are referring to, co-location, is only possible on the HR54 series.

As alluded to earlier by @litzdog911  you’ll end up having a much better experience with a streaming device like your current Fire Stick. It works as expected, and to be honest with you, is much less glitchy with streaming apps than the Gemini receiver.

Not sure about that there was a post here about an HR44 being colocated with the Gemini.  You will still need a coax or WiFi connection to the Gemini some say you can connect an Ethernet cable to both if you are not using the Ethernet port on the HR44 to connect to the internet but I think getting an Ethernet switch works if you are using the HR44 Ethernet port to connect to the internet.

@shannon02

My mistake, thanks for the clarification. So the co-location should work with an HR44 or HR54 then.
