Picture quality with a Gemini piggy-backed to a Genie DVR on Sat
I have had my TV (4K) connected to a Genie DVR with Sat connection for several years. I have always had great picture quality on live and recorded shows. I recently added the Gemini piggy-backed to the Genie. I have had a downgrade in perceived picture quality. I went through the Display settings in the Gemini menu to the resolution settings and it on the highest 4K p60 setting. I am wondering if maybe the cable between the two boxes is maybe getting some signal loss. I have not pulled the boxes back out to try to separate them for testing picture since I had to make several support calls to get the system synced. I used all the cables that came with the unit. Any suggestion?

What do you mean by "piggybacked"?
How exactly is the new Gemini connected?

Yes they do call it colocated. I have an ethernet cable connecting the two boxes and the hdmi going to tv.

The picture is not horrible but looks like maybe 720p instead of hd

720 is considered HD

With Genie being co-located you have a regular Genie. Is it the HR54?
Yes 720 is the lowest resolution of HD. But if picture degraded after co-locating the Gemini the question is what actual resolution is being passed through.

Yes, I have the HR54-500. Since the Gemini is the device connected to the HDMI cable I thought the fact that the Gemini settings says that the Display is set to 4K p60. That is the highest setting in the menu. I "seemed" better with just the Genie HDMI connection. The TV is a Samsung 4K smart tv. I can't see where in the tv menus to see anything about the signal coming in. I appreciate any help the forum can offer. My steps will be to pull it apart and do individual connections instead of colocated to test.

AFAIK when the Gemini is colocated DTV turns off the HR54 video/audio output so you don't pay the additional TV fee for the HR54.

I just co-located the Gemini with my Genie HR44-500 using the cables that came with the Gemini. Turned on the NASCAR race and both my wife and I quickly noticed the picture quality is not as good as when we had the Genie connected direcly to the TV rather than having the signal going thru the Gemini as it does now. Is this something recognized by the Directv Community?

@Wannabe32
The co-locating specifics are still building up in the knowledge base of the community.
The purpose of doing so is that the HR54 doesn't output 4K as the requirements updated when it was too far into production. So instead of paying for a 2nd TV connection, you co-locate either a Mini Genie (C61K) or the new Gemini (C71KW) as those are the only 4K Clients.
Now since that is not an issue with the HR44 as it cannot provide the 4K channels, co-locating seems to be more of hassle with no benefit. Unless you're just trying not to change inputs to use what streaming it is compatible with as opposed to having a Roku or such.

Thanks for the reply. The reason to install the Gemini was what you thought, to replace our Roku and reduce the number of remotes we needed to keep on hand. Given we were offered the Gemini at no cost it was a no brainer for us.

Connect your GEMINI using MOCO kit -Remove the LAN CABLE and your picture will improve.
I have a Gemini (NOT) collocated with a HR44 I my Gemini is Connected MOCO not with a Lan cable -My Gemini Will display all the 4K Channels -I cannot record them AS my HR44 will not do either.
NOTE: My Hr44 and Gemini are connected to a Sony 1570 AVR and the Gemini HDMI Cable is connected to the GAME port which that AVR port is set to enhanced.
Everything Watched through my GEMINI when I press My TV Display is Upscaled to 4k resolution.

RG6 Connects to the DIRECTV DECA Adapter then a short Lan cable from the Deca to the Lan port of the GEMINI -A Short usb cable from that Deca to the Gemini and a Separate Power supply _if you call 1-800-531-5000 ask for a GEMINI Deca Connection Kit for use with a standalone GEMINI.

Also make sure the account is setup for that Gemini to be co-located. Otherwise you pay an additional $7 a month as expected for another TV on the account.
