Increasing my genie 1 capacity

How do I increase my storage without losing everything I have saved?  I called directtv and they said I could upgrade to a genie 2 but what I have could not be transferred and would be lost. Is there any way around this?

We truly appreciate your responses @litzdog911, and @Juniper. You got it right, @LucyDolly2331. While you can't access your recorded shows if the eSATA drive is connected, you can unplug it so that you can still watch your original shows. Up to 12 TB or more is advisable for long-term use. Thanks for the quick response, @Juniper. We appreciate your input. Hi, @LucyDolly2231. Your recordings can't be transferred since each receiver has its own storage, but you can use an external eSATA hard drive to increase your DVR storage. Thanks for choosing DIRECTV. Note that using an external eSATA hard drive will replace your DVR's internal drive. You won't be able to access its recordings when the eSATA drive is connected.

I am not techie at all. If i understand this right i can get an external hard drive, fill it up with movies.  While that is happening i have no access to the original downloaded stuff. Then i could remove the external drive and save it for whenever i want to add it again and watch the movies?  I’ve read that the eSATA connection is not meant to be plugged in and removed over and over but a few times would be ok? Right?
