HR54 falsely stating too many active locations
I have been having an issue for almost 2 weeks now with an HR54 connected to 4 Gemini's and 2 mini Genies. After spending 15 hours of time on the phone with DirecTV tech support & a tech visit on Friday I'm at the end of the line. The phrase "whack a mole" describes this perfectly...once a receiver is added it drops off another no matter how many resets, refreshes etc are done. I was sent a new HR54 because DirecTV said it was possibly a "glitch"...of course there was nothing wrong with the original HR54. Falsely saying too many active locations error is something that they just can't seem to figure out. The latest answer is unplug the Gemini when not in use....what an answer LOL. Has anyone experienced this issue and is there a known fix? Any help would be appreciated....complete frustration at this point. An HS17 will not work for me due to the limited amount of receivers it supports…I need more than 7.

Hello there, we are sorry for the inconvenience you have with your service and for the time it has taken over the phone. Please check your private note to take a closer look at the issue you have with the HR54 device. Jhonny, DIRECTV Community Specialist

The Hr54 will only support 3 Clients active at any one time. The Hs-17 Will only support 7 Clients Active at one time.
Gemini & Mini's are all Clients-meaning they have no internal Tuners.
Since you have a HR-54 - Where you need TV's Active Change out any client with a H24 --(they have a Tuner and will not affect the Hr54 when in use.)That will solve your drop off Issue.
If you Had a HS-17 --you could not add a H24 on Clients allowed on the account.

This is what another user responded with to my post: It has long been suspected that a Gemini won't give up its tuner. This may confirm it. Because the DIRECTV app is the "launcher" for the Gemini, I suppose that the app never really exits and surrenders its resources.
That being said it would explain why once the Gemini's are active on the system they tie up tuners even though they are turned off with a remote control.
That's a big difference and should be shared with DirecTV customers who have and want to use Gemini's. The Gemini is a great product in my opinion but if you can only use 3 in this situation (HR54) then I'd rather stick with the mini Genies. Big waste of my time and research to get to this point.

The Gemini is a mini client when used on the sat system, the apps are only needed to stream from the internet.

Just began having this problem tonight. None of my genies are on. Yet, when I try to watch one of my tvs, I get the “too many active locations” message. What’s the fix for this?

Some think it is a bug in the new update.

All of my tubers are off. When I turn my living room tv (genie) I get the Too Many Locatikns message. With every single other tuner off. But when I turn on any other Tv, it works fine. I’ve had this same exact set up for 7 years. Never had this problem.

Suggest you try this -using your remote on the Genie --Menu -Search -(TYPE) CLEARMYBOX -then press search all --then search Agin --It will reboot -NOTE: it will take 24 to 48 hours for the VOD and the Full 24 hour guide to return.
it will reload any Missing Software plugins.

Thanks for the suggestion. But I can’t get past the Too Many Locations Active message on the screen. The Menu button on the remote doesn’t work. All I can hit is OK then it says “Connecting” and then back to the Too Many Locations message. It’s ridiculous. No other tvs or tuners are on.

Just tried that. Thank you for suggesting. I left it unplugged for over an hour. Same message when it reconnected. You can’t access the menu when the Too Many Locations message is on the screen. I’ve tried everything I know to do myself. Will a tech coming to the house be able to fix this? Replace the genie?

You don't need a tech to replace the Genie or minis, DTV ships replacements, but if this is a bug in the software then a tech can't fix it.

@Anthonyeates This happened to me last week. I have an HR44 and one Genie Mini C61. I got the error message on my screen I was authorized for zero locations and had to remove the genie mini. Long Story short somehow on DTV's end my genie mini got deactivated and was not registered. I had to call into tech support, give them the mac address and serial number of the Genie Mini and they added back onto my account.
