HR24-200 Works, But Does Not Light Up
I have the old style Directv DVR+ Model HR24-200. it seems to be working just fine, nut hte front panel no longer lights up when I turnit on. Therefore, i can't tell what resolution it is playing... Is there a way to fix this? is this a sign it is about to die?

If the front panel doesn’t light up but the HR24 still shows an image/audio over HDMI, this could be the front panel going bad, but not the entire receiver. You can try a red button reset (on the front behind the door that says “PUSH” to the right). Moreover, you can try unplugging the HR24 for a few seconds, then continuing to plug it back in. If the front panel still doesn’t show up, this is a minor problem but nothing major that would cause the HR24 to become completely unusable.
As far as resolution goes, there is a button on the RC6x remotes known as the “FORMAT” button. Pressing this once while watching a program will tell you the current resolution as well as screen format. These can be adjusted by continuing to press the “FORMAT” button multiple times to toggle through actual resolutions (480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p) along with size formats (original, crop, etc.).

Thank you for the reply. I was thinking about doing a reset to see if that would fix it, but was nervous that, if the light not coming on was a sign that the DVR was failing, it might not come on at all after the reset. All of my son's college football games are recorded on that devise and I am trying to figure out a way to get them off and save them in case the DVR ever fails completely (as has happended a couple of times now).

The only way to get your son's football games off would be through an HDMI capture card and capturing rhe video in real-time on your computer. This is a time consuming process, and the only known one beside continuing to attempt to fix the HR24 receiver.
Many football games are available over steaming and YouTube these days, so in the worst case scenario, such moments are still accessible elsewhere beside the HR24 hard drive.

Thanks again. I am not really sure what you mean by "through an HDMI capture card and capturing rhe video in real-time on your computer". I am not very techy at all and have never hear of a capture card. My wife found a device on-line called an "HD Capture Box with HD video to digital converter. It has HDMI inputs and Outputs to allow you to save recordings on an SD Card or thum drive. I was hoping to connect that to the DVR (in place of the TV) and "play" the recording to that HD Capture Box and onto an SD card. Hoping that works. Is that simiualr to what you were referring to? My son is a senior and we have games going back four years on there that I need to somehow get off.

The HR24 has a front panel dimming control with off, you need to press and hold the left arrow touch button then tap the right arrow touch button. It can be tricky to do. There are USB capture devices with software but they are SD only and real time to transfer to a laptop/computer using composite cables.

Unless those HD Capture Box with HD video to digital converters are HDCP 2.0 compatible they will not work with DTV receivers.

Thanks once again. I am trying to reach the Company because the description on line does not speak to compatibility.

I know, I looked at some online and I think they are not HDCP compatible

Is it just directv or does Dish network also make it impossible to store content recoreded on their DVRs?

Due to copyright issues, both Dish and DIRECTV prevent subscribers from transferring content on the hard drive to a PC easily.

All TV providers have to comply with HDCP rules that make it hard to copy which is why the content providers require it.

I don't understand this. If I had an old style VCR, I could record the games on my system for my own use with no copyright issues. Now I am stuck with importnt content on a very low quality DVR so the games will be gone when this thing dies (which it will; I have had three before this one). Sounds like my only option is to set up my phone in front of the tv and record the game off the screen while it plays, which will result in a lousy picture and even worse sound. This is disappointing.

The content providers don't want their programs copied in HD, VCRs are SD.

I am happy to record the content in SD if someone camn tell me how to do that. i just want his ball games to be saved on something that will last longer than this old DVR.

The manufacturer of the digital capture box said they don't know if it will work and that I should buy it and find out. No too promising.
