How to connect a Gemini device to a DirecTV Satellite Genie HD DVR Receiver?
How does one connect ( via Wifi internet?) a new Gemini device (replacing a wired mini Genie)
to a Genie HD DVR receiver with Satellite service?
Also is the Gemini device the exact same device (piece of Equipment)
if used for DirecTV via Satellite service or DirecTV Stream via internet service?
As I may switch to Stream service once my term contract is up with Satellite service.

Hello there. Gemini is the newest DIRECTV device that implements satellite functionality on the Android TV platform. The device looks like the DIRECTV STREAM Device and uses the same remote control. You cannot use a Gemini by itself because it can't receive DIRECTV programming or respond to DVR commands without being connected to the Genie/Genie 2. Gemini seamlessly switches from satellite to streaming, so you can enjoy your TV with DIRECTV STREAM or DIRECTV Satellite.
It also works with any other DIRECTV hardware you already have, like Genie 2 servers (HS17), Genie servers (HR44/HR54), and Genie Minis. Gemini can be installed on any TV, just like your Genie Minis are today. You can connect it to the Genie server using Wired (DECA) and Wireless (internal or external WVB) installations. To set up your Gemini device wired, check here: https://www.directv.com/support/satellite/article/KM1498116 or do it through Wi-Fi: https://www.directv.com/support/satellite/article/000091338
DIRECTV will be here for you.

You need a WVB(Wireless Video Bridge) connected by coax to the SWM splitter, it is built into the HS17 Genie2 or you can use the coax that is there by using a DECA BB. The Gemini uses DTV sat firmware to watch the programs on the Genie and is able to stream some apps from streaming services using the internet.
You can't use the Gemini with the DTV streaming only service as it doesn't have the streaming firmware you would need the Osprey version or use the app.

You sure that
"You can't use the Gemini with the DTV streaming only service as it doesn't have the streaming firmware"
the answer from DirecTVhelp says
"Gemini seamlessly switches from satellite to streaming, so you can enjoy your TV with DIRECTV STREAM or DIRECTV Satellite."
I understand that the Gemini requires a WVM & SWM with coax to connect to Genie.
thanks for reply and input.

DirecTV is doing customers a disservice by calling the new satellite client and the DirecTV Stream boxes by the same name .... Gemini. They're physically similar, but they have different firmware. The satellite Gemini is a mini Genie Client that works with the HS17 Genie Server. Yes, it can also stream via the internet, but not with the DirecTV Stream service.

I am replacing one of my Genie Minis with a Gemini wired kit and keeping satellite. Can I keep the other Genie Mini on the other TV without interruption, I like that TV setup without Gemini. In other words, can I mix Gemini and Genie Mini? I am setup with the Genie 2 DVR HS17-100. How come no videos showing Gemini Wired connection to a Genie 2 DVR? Unless I missed it. Thanks.

Yes, you can mix the Gemini and Genie Mini. Just ensure that both clients are activated on your directv account (each client costs $7/month).

In contacting DirecTV, they said they will give me a gemini free but will need a technician to come install and activate it and link it to my HR-44 SAT receiver and because a tech will be coming out, that requires me to commit to a 2 yr contract, something i do not want to do, at least not two yrs, maybe 1 yr contract would be OK. But can I set the gemini up myself without a tech coming out to my home, to avoid the 2 yr commitment.
cheers Tom.

Doesn't matter where you get it from or if it is self or tech installed new equipment comes with a new 2 year contract.

Unless the policy has changed recently I received a post card about getting a free Gemini receiver and if self installed it states contract obligation is only 1 year.

Yes, it does appear that the new partner is making changes in the TOS and the ELA.

You can buy them outside of Directv and hook them up easily without any new contract commitments.
I found (3) Gemini receivers at Goodwill for $4.00 a piece took them home and followed on screen instructions and they activated in place of
my genie mini's. Without and contracts, charges, etc.
They work just fine. Initially the setup for steaming subscriptions thought a code entered at login will transform the boxes into use for satellite clients.

I am a bulk DirecTV customer thru Adcomm with an HS17 and four mini genie client boxes. According to Adcomm, DirecTV has not released the Gemini Satellite for bulk customers. What do I need to do to purchase and install my own Gemini Satellie receiver to replace one of the Genie clients?
