How do I do a factory reset on receiver?
https://www.directv.com/support/article/000092463 says to hold the blue button for 20 seconds. That does nothing. There's a menu option that claims to do a reset, but it does nothing as well. I tried contacting support, and this is the biggest mystery they've ever encountered... after half an hour of stumbling around and them clearly not even understanding the concept of a factory reset, I gave up.

HR54/500 I did a menu "Reset Everywhere", and that seems to have done it, but then the screen for the DVR shows a grey 4:3 box with ads in it. I'm wondering if it now has to be re-authorized.

Why did you need to do a "factory reset"?

What difference does it make? I did it. I wanted to wipe out all recording and programming and start over. Are you saying that my intentions somehow affected the process?

Just curious if you were having some initial issue that prompted you to perform a factory reset. But, yes, you'll likely need to call DirecTV an reauthorize the box. Keep us posted.

Needing to do a full factory reset is so rare, we just wanted to know what the issue was to make sure you got the correct resolution. Wiping favorites list, and especially recordings, is a last resort for most people.
Nothing malicious or judgmental was meant. Just making sure you got the correct fix for whatever issue you were having. And just in case, since a common reason for someone to do this was because they were selling/giving it away to someone else, boxes can not be transferred between accounts any more. Once deactivated off the account it cannot be reactivated, so gets returned (or recycled depending on model number).

This thread is about DirecTV satellite service. According to the thread you made last month you have DIRECTV STREAM. So lets make sure we are discussing the right equipment and service before jumping to conclusions
Even if you have STREAM, it matters if that is what your friend has or if they have DirecTV (satellite) or DirecTV via Internet (streaming-only, but billing and service model is similar to satellite) as all 3 services can use the Gemini (C71KW) but only if it is for the correct service (as firmware is different between them).
(And if your friend had one that boots up with the AT&T logo than it cannot be used because that was an very old one before they changed where the software updates from and there is no way to manually update it if it wasn't connected when the change happened making it a brick)

Sorry,
It is for DirecTV stream and our HOA is changing from Frontier to DirecTV streaming. So the box is new and the same one they sent out to all homeowners, so people are still waiting on their boxes. Will a factory reset remove my neighbors profile permanently? They are using just their smart TV's and the app.

Thanks for the clarity.
Since this thread is for satellite and from a couple years ago, start a new thread in the DIRECTV STREAM section for precise guidance. Include where your friend got his, as there is DIRECTV STREAM and DirecTV via Internet (different billing models and rules, though the streaming box has no difference in model number). Also verify even if "new' it doesn't have the AT&T logo booting up.
Sounds like you should be ok but others in the forum will have more info than I on the streaming-only device use.
