HDMI output not working through A/V receiver

When I connect my DirecTV receiver directly to my TV via HDMI cable, everything works fine. But, if I try to connect via my A/V receiver using HDMI, I do not get any audio or video. Funny thing is, I have been using the DirecTV receiver via the A/V receiver for months. It just stopped working one fine day. I have tried using different cables and different ports on the A/V receiver, but no success. I have also tried resetting the DirecTV receiver.

I would really appreciate if anyone could help me.

My setup is as follows.

DirecTV Receiver : H24-100

A/V Receiver : Onkyo SR TX308

TV: Samsung LCD

have you tried other sources on the AV receiver?  this is to rule out that the AV receiver is not the problem.

Yes, I have tried other HDMI ports on both the TV and the A/V Receiver. the A/V receiver has three HDMI inputs, and the TV has two HDMI inputs. The DirecTV receiver has only one HDMI output.

no, I am referring to other devices such as a blue-ray player, PS3 or something of that nature.

Yes, I used a DVD player on the same HDMI port of the A/V Receiver and it works.

Does the H24's HDMI output work if you connect directly to the TV instead of the AV Receiver?  I can't think of any reason why it work connected to the TV, but not through the AV Receiver, unless there's some setting on the AV Receiver that's messing it up.

What happens if you press the Receiver's front panel RESolution button to cycle the video output resolution (480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i)?  Do any of those work?

You might also check the appropriate thread for your AV Receiver at http://www.avsforum.com in the AV Receiver Forum.

The DirecTV receiver works when connected directly to the TV via HDMI. I'm not convinced the A/V receiver settings are to blame. I have used the DirecTV box via the A/V receiver for months.

As for different resolutions, I have enabled all the 'lower' resolutions on both DirecTV as well as the TV.

Not sure what else to suggest.  If it works when directly connected to the HDTV, then you know that the Receiver's HDMI output is working normally.  That points the finger at the AV Receiver. Check out the relevant thread in the AV Receiver Forum at AVS Forum to see if anyone has had this sort of problem with that brand/model AV Receiver.

I do not have anything specific but I can tell you my experience here on the forums.  I have responded to hundreds of posts regarding the signal is not passing throught the AVR and I cannot recall a single case that was not corrected by some setting in the AVR.  I am not familaiar personally with your model, but most have HDMI in assign and HDMI stripping settings that sometimes a single press of a AVR remote button will mess up.

  • To "ayonvooa" and anyone else who has this problem:  I realize all posts above are from 13 years ago, but others might be reading these posts because they have the same problem NOW.  I recently had the exact same lack of input from my Directv Genie into my Marantz NR1685 A/V receiver. You might have seen a message on your TV like  "No signal. Check your external connections." In addition to a manual input selector, my Marantz A/V receiver has so-called smart (automatic) switching, that senses which input source is active and sends that to the A/V receiver's output to the display (the TV). The receiver's circuitry apparently needs a strong input signal in order to work correctly.  I'm not familiar with the specific input and output configuration of the Onkyo referenced in the original post by "ayanooa" above.  In that original post, the user connected a DVD to the satellite input port and it worked.  However, the problem could still be your satellite input port because of a poor connection.  On the back of your A/V receiver your HDMI input port that receives the signal from your Directv receiver is likely labeled "CBL/ SAT."  HDMI cables have either 19 or 29 pins that all have to be connected cleanly to have a complete and strong signal.  In my case, the CBL/SAT input port on my A/V receiver had become weakened by cable strain, resulting in incomplete connection of all those pins into my A/V receiver's CBL/SAT port.  This occurs either when the HDMI cable is too short and places sideways strain on the CBL/SAT input port, or it can occur just from the weight of your HDMI cable pulling down on the input port over a period of years.  If that port has become loose from cable strain, it can result in an intermittent loss or complete loss of signal into your A/V receiver.  I suggest that you first assess whether there is any undue cable strain on the CBL/SAT port, and any other input port that has a connected cable.  If so, you should alleviate that strain by ensuring that the HDMI cable is supported so that the HDMI connector goes straight into the port without strain. This requires that you either use a longer cable so that there is plenty of slack or, if the cable is already long enough, tie off the cable to something so that the connector goes straight in and there is no strain on the cable. Next, test the integrity of your CBL/SAT input port by simply disconnecting and firmly reconnecting the HDMI cable into that port to determine if the port wiggles even a little bit.  If so, your pins might not be connecting properly.  Try firmly pushing the connector straight in all the way and very gently moving it side to side ever so slightly to see if your signal comes through.  If that doesn't work and there has been cable strain on the port, your port's internal soldered connections might be damaged.  An experienced A/V technician might be able to re-solder the internal connections, depending on the amount of damage.  If that is not feasible, then you have two choices:  1) connect your Directv output HDMI cable to a different input port, such as AUX1, or 2) buy a new A/V receiver and make sure there is no strain on any of your cables to prevent a recurrence of the problem.  The ideal configuration for any A/V setup is to do what broadcast engineers do, which is to purchase the following:  1) an electronic equipment rack that will hold your electronic gear and has the fittings to accept lacing bars, 2) lacing bars and screws that attach to the back of the rack, and 3) wire ties that will secure all your input and output cables to the lacing bar with slack so that there is no strain on the ports.  I hope this is helpful to anyone experiencing sudden loss of signal input to your A/V receiver from your Directv or other brand of cable or satellite receiver.
