H24-700 vs H24-200: An interesting quirk.

I've seen some forums across the internet which happen to talk about this particular receiver and if there are any differences in the model numbers. The common answer is no, they denote who manufactured the receiver, but the correct answer is yes.

In fact, the models apart from the 700 version, won't even pickup 103 or 99 satellites in particular configurations. It's pretty concerning when, after weeks of searching, I've found nothing from the DirecTV or AT&T community which describe this issue.

For example:

  • In a system using an SL3 -> (tamp/plocker if required) -> SWM30s -> splitters -> H24-700 *** This works
  • In a system using an SL3 -> (tamp/plocker if required) -> SWM30s -> splitters -> H24-200 *** No 103, often no 99

However, when you use and SL5 LNB, all issues are corrected with H24-200s not picking up 103 satellite. So, there is definitely a difference in how these receivers handle the signals coming from the LNBs they're connected to. It's a fundamental difference which isn't explicitly described anywhere and should be.

I hope this helps you poor, poor technician brethren of mine.

All DTV receivers are made to the same specs and all HD receivers get both the 99 and 103 sats.

That should be a technical issue with your specific box then as model numbers are made to the same specs. The manufacture code is literally who made it, required to be to the same spec.

If multiple -200 reflect this issue, then there is a flaw in the equipment from the manufacturer that is not meeting the specs as required. There is not supposed to be any difference, so if there is any experienced it is a technical issue, not by design.

This IS absolutely correct.  I have three H24 boxes... two are 700s and one is a 200.  The 700s work flawlessly on a SL3 on multi switch.  The 200 does NOT.  Absolutely not.  I have swapped in a 200 and it also does not work.  I have spent hours and hours on this.  It was a breath of fresh air (and sanity check) to see / find this (4-year old) article.  All versions of the H24 work on the SWM system but the -200 series (who knows what manufacturer made it since that is what we are told that this coding indicates the manufacturer) does not.  Now I need to go back to DirecTV and convince them to find and swap out my 200 with a 700.  If not I have no use for the 200 and will turn it in and buy a 700 on eBay for $30.

As mentioned, they are not supposed to be different. So that points to a flaw from the -200 manufacturer.

There is absolutely no way to designate a specific model, let alone manufacturer, for any warranty replacements or upgrades. So it is possible to get a H24-200 (if they have any H24s left or even an H25). You get next off the shelf, whatever it is. All it should be is same model or newer (so for example if they were available you would not get an H23).

You cannot purchase an H24. DirecTV went to lease-only years ago. Any used boxes on eBay are either stolen or the seller didn't know it was still owned by DirecTV (even if it was designated non-returnable). To that point, DirecTV stopped activating used boxes. So you either get a warranty replacement through DirecTV (no guarantee it would be -200 or even an H24 in the first place) or an authorized upgrade (with 24 month service agreement).

Thanks for the insight.  Still no confirmation you agree with the fact that the 200 does not work. So I can buy a box at Solid Signal very easily too.  Too expensive but for the $ I pay for these 15 yo receivers I will probably have them send a tech with several boxes on their truck and hope one is a 700.  If not, there will be another dispatch.  This is not acceptable any longer.

The issue you have is not all -200 across the board. With multiple reports of the issues it sounds like that manufacturer had a run of them with an issue. No matter what company made it, they are required to be to the same specs. Sorry I am not giving you the confirmation you desire. Either way, it does not change your situation.

Yes Solid Signal is an Authorized Retailer. However instead of a warranty replacement from DirecTV ($19.95 delivery), or free upgrade (if your account qualifies for one), they can only provide you the box for the one-time lease cost (was $99 for an HD non-DVR, but as dedicated receivers are discontinued they upped the prices). Just like getting through DirecTV, no guarantee on manufacturer. And an upgrade, even through Solid Signal, will still come with a 24 month service agreement.

Warranty replacement is not delivered by tech. They drop ship for $19.95. A tech dispatch ($99) is only if they need to do work on your owned equipment (dish, cabling, etc.) beyond the box itself. Swapping a box is something you do yourself. And they certainly are not going to repeatedly do a tech dispatch for free. Unfortunately you are wanting specific assurances that they as a business are not setup to accommodate.

If you want other guidance I would suggest making your own thread. Digging up one from years ago usually means it gets shut down to avoid confusion if any information might be outdated or notifying individuals who are long past the discussion.
