Equipment upgrade

Hello all!

My parents have been DirectTV customers forever.  Late 1990's I think.  Live in the woods. ;)

They currently have an H23-600, HR44-200, two C51-500's, and two C41-500's.

Each receiver has a coax connected to it.  I heard from someone that the latest technology only requires one unit to be connected via coax and then the others would connect wirelessly.  Is this info correct?  If so, which model receivers would these be and is an equipment upgrade/swap usually free for longtime customers?

Many thanks!  fyi, I'm a technical guy familiar with big city cable, Comcast, but this DirecTV stuff is new to me.

Bill

No, DirecTV won't take back the H23 HD Receiver. They'll need to order a C41W Wireless Mini from DirecTV. DirecTV will provide professional installation, including a Wireless Video Bridge if needed based on the distances required. And, yes, the Wireless Mini gets its video feed from the HR44 Genie DVR.

If their current equipment is performing OK, I wouldn't change anything. Sure, you could "upgrade" to wireless Mini Clients, but if the coax is already there, that's a better way to go. The HR44 and those other boxes are still reasonably current.

Thanks for the quick response litz!.. They have one room being remodeled that will NOT have a coax drop.  Would all clients be required to go to Mini Clients if one does?

Thanks,

Bill

No. They can simply add a wireless Mini Genie to their account for the room with no coax. But note that they already have more Mini's than the HR44 can support simultaneously. The HR44/HR54 Genie DVRs can support 3 Mini's simultaneously. If they really want to use that many TVs simultaneously, they would need to upgrade to a Genie Server (HS17), and then they would have to dump their H23 HD Receiver.

Whoohoo... Feel like I'm getting educated quick on this stuff with your responses.

Ok.. From appearances I imagine the two C41-500's and the two C51-500's are minis.

The room being remodeled that will no longer have a coax drop happens to be the one with the older H23-600.

So far there hasn't been a need to watch More than 3 Tv's at a time.

Thanks,

Bill

So, just to be sure I'm clear...

They can return the H23-600 for a wireless mini Genie.  Is there a specific model number?

I assume this new wireless mini Genie will receive the signal, wirelessly, from their HR44-200.  Is that correct?

Any other equipment required? Any distance limitations between the wireless mini Genie and the HR44-200 to be concerned about?

Thanks!

DTV will most likely not take back the H23, the C41W or C61W are the only wireless minis made and you will have to buy a WVB and it will have to be tech installed for $99.00 all minis are also $99.00 unless you have a free upgrade.  There is an 80' free air range on the wireless.

I have been a long time customer and I will be getting  an upgrade tomorrow. Will I loose all my set recordings  or is there a way the tech can save them so I don't  have to go back and put them  all back in?

Are there discounts for senior citizens or long term clients?
