DIRECTV found code for my Sony reciever but instantly forgets it (?)

I have a DIRECTV with the white remote. (RC73)

I just added a Sony receiver model str- dh790.

When I turn on the directv, it automatically sends the prompt at the right hand bottom corner of the screen asking to "change audio device" because it sensed a new device I think.

I go through the prompts and find the code that turns on and off my new Sony receiver and I confirm it by the prompt which says "It Worked" then I hit done.

But when I press the OFF button on the white remote, the new Sony reciever stays on.  and when i turn the TV turn back on, it prompts  the same "change audio device" again like it never saved..

I have gone through the setup several times.  Any insight on this?

"U-verse"?  That's AT&T's cable service, not DirecTV. Please clarify your DirecTV DVR/Receiver model number.

Hello @hotrodjohn71, we're sorry that you're having issues programming our Genie remote with your new device, and we'd like for you to follow the next steps:

- Point the remote at your Genie HD DVR, Genie Mini, or Wireless Genie Mini.

- Press and hold the MUTE and SELECT buttons while continuing to point the remote at a Genie device. Stop when the green light at the top of the remote blinks twice.

- Use the buttons on your Genie remote to enter code 961.

- Press the channel up button once.

- Press Enter.

- Select OK when the TV screen displays Your Remote is now setup for RF.

- Power on the device you want your remote to control.

- Press MENU on your remote.

- Select Settings > Remote Control > Program Remote.

- Select the device you wish to control with the remote.

- Follow the on-screen prompts to complete programming. The directions vary for different devices.

Once you complete these steps, we'd be attentive to your results.💙Jhon, DIRECTV Community Specialist

DirectvHelp,

Thank you.

I have done that process several times and as the subject line of my original post states, after all is done correctly, and acknowledge by the prompts, the On/Off will not function after shut off but volume will work.

It literally works correctly in that program process i.e. receiver will turn on and off but after shutting system down, it will not activate on/off .

Thank you for trying these steps. Let's try these other ones to fully program your remote with your device:

  1. On the front panel of the receiver, press Menu > Settings > Remote Control > IR/RF Setup.

  2. With IR highlighted, select Continue.

  3. If issues persist, program the remote to IR mode by pressing and holding Mute and Select until green light on remote flashes twice.

  4. Enter 987 on the keypad (lights may flash green 4 times or may flash red once).

We'll be here for you to make sure everything works properly. Jhon, DIRECTV Community Specialist

I go through the process to select my receiver, which is basically a sound bar, in the remote process and it works in the testing mode. In other words in the test mode for the code I use volume will work and on/off will work. Then when I select "It worked" and then "Done" and exit that screen; and go to turn everything off in real time, the receiver will not turn off so it works in the setup (where a code is selected) mode but in real time it will not work however the volume does work.

Why do you suppose it would work correctly in the setup mode but then after leaving the setup mode screen it doesn't work?

Pairing your remote control with your sound bar shouldn't be a problem. However, we are here to help you. Please check your private note to take a closer look at your case. Jhonny, DIRECTV Community Specialist

The RC7X remotes are not made to turn on/off any soundbars/A/V receivers, HDMI-CEC does that DTV calls it HDMI control, what the soundbar maker calls it you need to find out.  both the HR54 and the soundbar need the HDMI-CEC turned on.

Thank you Shannon2,  but don't you think it is kind of interesting that it actually does turn the sound bar on and off with the correct code in the remote setup process but after you hit "it worked" and you hit "done" then it FORGETS and does not work?

It would seem that if the functionality of on/off actually does work in that setup process, then it ought to actually work when it is done. Maybe thats just me.
